The Canadian Holy of Holies

Yea verily, hear ye the words of the Gospel of the Great White North:

. . . and on thy sacred pilgrimage, proceedeth thou to Ottawa Street in the holy city of Hamilton in the province of Ontario. Feareth not neither Tiger Cats nor the United Steelworkers Union nor yet even Sheila Copps, for the Lord Stanley shall protect thee on thy journey.

And lo, on Ottawa Street shalt thou findeth the Sacred Way revered by all true Canuckians of faith and lovers of donuts everywhere.

O thou unworthy one, behold the sacred shrine -- hallelujah, the very first Tim Hortons store in all of Canada! Shield thy eyes, cover thy head and kneel before its glory! For 'twas on this holy spot that Saint Tim himself trod in his hockey skates of fire. Yea and here createth he the very first Timbit, like unto the manna of heaven that did sustaineth the Israelites during their exodus from Egypt.

And the hand of the Lord Stanley did cause this plaque of bronze to appear on the front of the holy shrine, so that all who come may marvel at and worship at this sacred spot.

Yea verily, drinketh thou thy double-double and eateth thou thy maple glazed donut, symbols of all that be sacred and holy in this great land from sea to sea to sea.

Here endeth the lesson, eh?

[All photos by Debra She Who Seeks, May 2013. And a special thank you to Lois of Mid Life Fibres who told me of this sacred spot and how to get there this summer while in Hamilton!]

Yet another thing I have never heard of before. I suppose they will be everywhere soon.

A friend of mine swears by their coffee and can't live without it.

I'm watching this programme called "Bomb Girls" about the women who worked in munitions during WWII and I just love it. It's nice to see some of your country. So pretty.

We don't have any of those here, but I've heard nothing but great things about their coffee. At least you can't miss what you've never tried, right?

I, though unworthy, tasted Saint Tim's blessed glazed circle of sweet goodness (that sounds rather questionable...).

I swallowed my piece fast, and because my companion's love was true (and I was probably looking at his holy pastry with longing) he fed it to me.

Sometimes a dream about it... and drool ;-D

I used to like Tim Hortons, when they were making (seemingly) fresh doughnuts. Then they let themselves go and I doubt there is one franchise in Québec where the doughnuts are fresh. My brother once ripped one apart, it looked, sounded, smelled and tasted like cardboard. And then they started serving more muffins, third grade bagels and coffees than doughnuts, and their advertisement became subject of ridicule too. So I was very happy when Tim Hortons closed down on Mont-Royal Avenue.

I like the jalapeno bagels. Almost stopped there yesterday for one, along with hot chocolate and a little writing time. Only I ran out of time.

Thank you for sharing this, Debra! I did not know the history! Every time I am in Canada, I have to got to Timmy's for coffee, a timbit, and a maple glazed doughnut! It's quintessentially Canadian! With more soul than Starbucks! Take care!

I could go for one of those right now!

Tim Horton doesn't exist in the UK. :D Well I'm sure there are a great many of them actually, but they probably have very little to do with donuts.

Timmy's!!!! His timbits have spread to the South, to the humblefolk of New York, and has enlightened us with pumpkin muffins and maple bacon paninis, yea, verily.

I hang my head in shame as I have never tasted the deliciousness that is Tim Horton's donuts. I will take your word for it being a superior product.

Okay, eh. I celebrated the B.C. Lions winning the Grey Cup, the Vancouver Canucks winning the Stanley Cup, with a bunch of coffee and doughnuts from Tim Hortons, eh.

Then I woke up....
