Swiss Chalet Bird House

When My Rare One asked what kind of miniature bird house I would like to have, I thought immediately of my heritage and said -- a Swiss chalet! And then, quite frankly, I forgot all about it. But look what she surprised me with at Christmas!

To a basic little wooden A-frame bird house, My Rare One created and added -- window boxes full of flowers, shutters, stencilled adornments, net curtains inside the windows, a woodpile, a watering can, skis and ski poles, and a Swiss flag!

Traditionally, chalets in the Alps often had rocks weighing down their roofs so a select few were glued to this roof as well!

My Rare One added a hand-painted "stone" chimney at the back too.

Here's a closeup of those adorable little skis and the front flower box with its greenery and colourful flowers!

How my Mom and my Swiss-born Grandma would have loved this! And of course, I love it too!

Hello Debra, This is undoubtedly your Rare One's masterpiece. I am impressed not only with the detailed cratfsmanship, but also with the research that went into this project--especially the rocks on the roof!

The level of detail is amazing ... there’s even hinges on the gate. What is the woodpile made of?

Lady M said...

I can see that a lot of love and craftmanship went into making that for you.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ BootsandBraids -- I believe she made the woodpile from actual tree twigs and splinters that she cut and shaped to size.

Very cute but best is it was so obviously made with talent, attention to detail craftmanship, and love.

Just so sweet! (I'm going to google "stones on chalet roofs" to find out why they do this.)

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Cynthia -- Alpine chalet roofs tend to be very steep so that snow will slide off easily in the winter. But such roofs are more vulnerable to damage by heavy mountain winds, so that's why rocks were traditionally put on the roofs to help weigh them down.

Switzerland is one of my all time favourite places to visit, and I would love to think that I will be able to return there again one of these fine days.

Oh how wonderful! My sister just made a birdfeeder for her husband's birthday. It looks like their log cabin. The roof is hinged to fill with seed.
