Here's a few photos of gold (or gilded) items
from my travels over the years --
1. Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy (2008)
A corridor ceiling overflowing with
golden-framed Renaissance paintings.
2. Brooklyn Public Library, New York (2009)
On one of its entrance columns, the Goddess Athena
with the Python of Delphi at her feet.
3. Coronation Chair, Westminster Abbey,
London, England (2009)
The ancient Chair itself is wood, but
the four Lions supporting it are gilded.
The empty space just above the Lions is
where the Stone of Scone is placed
for the Coronation ceremony.
4. Temple of the Golden Pavilion,
Kyoto, Japan (2012)
This photo was taken from the back,
on the shore of the lake
which the Temple overlooks.
5. Sweet Cake Plate, Uji City, Japan (2012)
I was served this sweet cake
on a golden glazed ceramic plate
at the start of a Tea Ceremony.

ReplyDeletePerhaps it is the effect of enduring the convicted felon in the Whitehouse's excesses, but all the gold stuff now looks tacky to me.

ReplyDelete🤢 The "gold" in Trump's NY penthouse and at Mar-a-Lardo is so obviously cheap gilt that it boggles the mind how people who are wealthy can be dazzled by it! 🤪 But, slathering it all over the Oval Bordello at the WH is an insult to all of us! Low-class, tasteless, born-rich gutter trash don't develop style just because they have lots of money! Trump won't even spend a coupla bucks on a decent suit, a tailor, or a hair and makeup specialist! 🤡💩
I remember when I was eighteen and visited the Vatican. I looked up at the ceiling and any idea I might have had about The Church following the admonition of Jesus concerning the piling up of riches were completely shattered.

But honestly, the plate is the best.

ReplyDeleteMy mother developed a fondness for dishes with a gold border and I was delighted to get rid of all of those! Can't put them in the microwave...

ReplyDeleteL’or, lorsqu’il est utilisé avec raffinement, est magnifique. Je suis également allé au Japon et j’ai admiré le Kinkaku-ji, le Temple du Pavilion d’or, dans la charmante cité de Kyoto. :)

ReplyDeleteThese are amazing! I am glad you didn't include any of Trump's images. I like the gold spattered plate. I see plenty of gold rimmed dinnerware in op-shops (thrift stores) they are beautiful but nobody wants things that can't go in the dishwasher or microwave. I still have a few pieces but they are packed away and never used.
