A Spooky Ancestral Samhain
Hello, Her Royal Highness the cat here. Why are you so surprised to see me? On this sacred night of Samhain when the Wheel turns and the Veil is thin, why shouldn't I be back from the dead and blogging again? Sheesh.
Tonight we honour our ancestors, those who lived and died before us, preparing the path for our glorious selves. Let me share a bit of my long genealogy with you, Humans, unworthy though you are.
As you know, many of my ancestors were quite rightly worshipped in Egypt as Gods and Goddesses. Unfortunately, things went rather downhill after that.
Still, my people made a good living in medieval Europe during the bubonic plague. Oh yes, the Black Death was a fine time indeed for us cats. Rats were positively thick on the ground back then, thick!
In the Elizabethan age, one of my pampered forebears lived high and mighty among the nobility . . .
. . . while at the same time, another blackguard ancestor of mine was the most piratical scum that ever shipped a handspike.
In Edwardian England, one of my female ancestors was a noted Suffragette who agitated tirelessly for female kitties' right to vote. The police did not need to force feed her in prison though, since no cat in her right mind would ever refuse to eat, no matter what the cause.
Yes, my forebears included common labourers working in the worst Dickensian conditions in those "dark Satanic mills" of poetic fame . . .
. . . and also included some of the biggest capitalist toffs you'd ever care to see. Those fat cats never lifted a paw or worked a day in their entire nine lives. Oppressing the purrletariat was their only pastime and they did so with enthusiasm.
And do you know that I even had an illustrious and intrepid explorer among my ancestors who circumnavigated the globe many times in search of fame and adventure!
But alas, my forebear who was ship's cat on the Titanic was not as fortunate.
Let's not forget that I've also had many noted entertainers in my family line. Oh, how the female kitties swooned for this big guy! Love Me Tender Vittles was his biggest hit.
Well, I hope you enjoyed reading about some of my family tree. I'm sure your genealogy is nowhere near as interesting as mine, yet you should honour your ancestors all the same, Humans. Take some time to think of them tonight and be thankful for their lives.
"...included some of the biggest capitalist toffs you'd ever care to see. Those fat cats never lifted a paw or worked a day in their entire nine lives." - sounds like a large segment of american society.
ReplyDeleteblessed samhain to all!
So much more interesting than my family tree!
ReplyDeleteI have just read this post to my cats Wilson and Ellie and they were impressed.
Certainly appreciate all the effort that goes into your posts Debra.
Keep shining my friend.
Peggyxxxx
Hahaha! Blue blood!!!
ReplyDeleteBlessed Samhein!!!
Happy Samhain to you as well!
ReplyDeleteI love that Capt. Ambrose one. Uh oh, does that mean I'm a Steampunk? I hope not, I don't look good in top hats or welding goggles.
It's a weird expression the artist gave to the cats in the plague painting. It's almost the expression of a stoner who just got caught doing something embarrassing like trying to eat cereal with a shot glass.
Love Me Tender Vittles ... that's cute! Happy Samhain, Debra!
ReplyDeleteWe is ever so unworthy of HRH! Power to the felines!
ReplyDeleteImpressive family tree... I had to stop Nick and Nora from approaching it ... if you know what I mean! LOL.
ReplyDeleteHappy Samhain to HRH.. like Dolly it's good to have you back....
Oh My! It is so good to see you HRH! I hope all is good in the afterlife! I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your ancestors. Quite a lineage. A Blessed Samhain for you and yours.
ReplyDeleteInteresting thoughts indeed. Greetings to you.
ReplyDeleteFur Ball, that is quite a family tree!!! And I must add you look even more mesmerizing in the after life. And a great Samahain to Debs and all!
ReplyDeleteThe Veil Is Getting Thin-author unknown
As I went out walking this fall afternoon,
I heard a wisper wispering.
I heard a wisper wispering,
Upon this fine fall day...
As I went out walking this fall afternoon,
I heard a laugh a'laughing.
I heard a laugh a'laughing,
Upon this fine fall day...
I heard this wisper and I wondered,
I heard this laugh and then I knew.
The time is getting near my friends,
The time that I hold dear my friends,
The veil is getting thin my friends,
And strange things will pass through.
Dexter is doing a major freak out..I think their are haints out there..
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to hear from HRH again! What a history our feline friends have had!
ReplyDeletelove me tender vittles - funny!
ReplyDeleteGreat fun, Debra! It was good to see HRH breaking through the veil! I wish she could scare those hotdog/wiener treats out of my mind. Talk about creeped out! I wish I were still teaching, I'd have made some for my third graders! Happy Samhain!
ReplyDeleteI'd follow Ambrose Mittens to the ends of the earth.
ReplyDeleteSo nice that HRH could visit on this special occasion. I'll be sure to share this fabulous post with Guy and Dot!

ReplyDeleteCool pics of our Familiars.
ReplyDeleteFunny and, of course, educational.
ReplyDeleteI laughed at loud at the line, "Unfortunately, things went rather downhill after that."
That's one of those lines I wish I could write, but alas, I'm not that funny.
Great post Debra! And awesome pictures :-).
ReplyDeleteOlder cats pass this on to the young. We have but a glance. This is why cats are not impressed with humans. They only need us to wait on them.
ReplyDeletethe Ol'Buzzard
Cats! I just love them (except the constantly mewling ones, in heat).
ReplyDeleteA quiet, loving, fluffy cat is an ideal pet.
I gave mine expensive kibbles and she is almost as puffy as a pillow.
Her Royal Highness! I just new you'd be back. What a delight. You are looking quite electric, by the way... and as informative as ever.
ReplyDeleteI hope you and Debra had a wonderful Samhain, exchanging stories about your time away from each other. ♥
A belated happy Halloween to you... and to HRH. We spent Halloween night with a cat.
ReplyDeleteWell-written, Debra and a fun read at that.
ReplyDeleteWishing the best in this coming season and the many more after that.
