Vikings Then and Now

Those old timey Vikings
were one tough bunch.

They learned how to pillage and kill at a young age.

And man, did Vikings ever get around!

Vikings had their softer side too, I suppose.

Yes, kittens.

Bloodthirsty berserker Viking kittens.

When not away killing and pillaging,
Vikings were farmers like everyone else.

Kind of.

Thanks to the pandemic, however,
Vikings are making a big comeback today.

But modern Vikings are a much
more socially responsible bunch.

For example, they willingly
observe social distancing rules.

They eat by themselves in restaurants,
not in big groups anymore.

Many just stay home and self-isolate.

They've cut way, WAY down on the pillaging and killing.

Now they're the ones most likely to be picked on.

Viking attitudes to traveling have
dramatically changed as well.

Now they're just tourists
like everyone else.

  1. I have been very remiss about visiting blogs this week - blame it on pandemic blues - but I've caught up with yours now.
I think I must have got used to new blogger for most of the time.
You see that was what was wrong with my social distancing stick - it didn't have a sharp metal pointy end. I shall have to make adjustments.

  3. Bloody Vikings! I do think that most people simply don't know history very well. I think you do! One can still have humor though! (Now whenever I hear an ad for Viking River Cruises, I will giggle and my hubby will wonder why!)

  4. that dude folding laundry looks NOTHING like a fierce viking. wait til spo sees this post! and what does HRH think about the viking cats?

  5. Fact check: Those tourists on "viking cruises" do in fact loot the towns and monasteries. Sweet story about brides receiving kittens, but wasn't that the wedding night meal? (Ew, that made me cringe.)

  6. Give me good viking funnies any day. Have a nice weekend.

  7. My Viking ancestors gave a grunt of acknowledgement to the above!

  8. Fascinating that Buddha travelled all that way. I wonder if the vikings did yoga as well?

  9. The original reason humans domesticated cats was that they're useful for keeping rodents away from food supplies. So a kitten would be a very practical gift for setting up a new household.

If you want to loot and pillage, get a job in the venture capital industry. They're really boring dressers compared to Vikings, though.

  10. Love those damned Vikings! From a distance, obvs.
I think the gift of a kitten is especially poignant. A baby killing machine, aww!

    Great memes, as usual!

  11. Oh sure. Those ravens are not disease vectors for CORVID-19? Tell me another one.

I thought you were posting Fake Memes with that Buddha statue one, but apparently it's true.

  12. Perhaps the lesson is that Buddhists got around. Or that traders in Eurasia got around in general. From that restaurant photo, it looks like the Vikings discovered Italy also.

  13. I think I've seen that Viking guy, Thorbob. He was last seen in La Grange here in Texas getting his horns curled or something like that. I'm sure the ladies like him lots.

  14. There are numerous myths surrounding the Vikings - one of them being that they had horns on their helmets!!! But they didn't.

  17. Just so happy! Ancestry.com recently revised my pie chart, showing less Irish and more Scandinavian. At first I was sad, but this post made me glad. Onward with Odin.

  19. Bilbo posted a good Viking joke on FB. Actually, it's a really bad pun. If you can get to it, it's ... https://www.facebook.com/bill.bordas/posts/10219200457625455
Let me know if you can't see it and I'll copy it and post it on my blog.

  20. Look at the ship's sail in the final meme. Viking pride!

  21. According to NOVA, Vikings were so enamoured with orange striped cats that they brought them back to Scandinavia from the Middle East. Vikings also carried one or two orange cats on each of their ships because they were considered good luck. Given the appearance of the orange beserker kittens in today's post, they could easily have fought alongside their red-bearded Viking mates! LOL!

And Odin's Social Distancing Spear = a sharpened hockey stick.

  22. That beard in the first photo looks as if it could hold an entire Viking meal.

    Love,
    Janie

  26. Actually, Viking was a profession, not a culture of ethnic group. But yeah, Vikings are cool.

  27. oh this made the day for me. I too don't give tuppence about the accuracy of the 'horned helmet' wearing one is one of life's greatest pleasures.

  28. Mike sent me - and I am v grateful to him and to you.
    Many thanks.
Our cat Jazz is definitely a berserker. He doesn't bother with a helmet though.

  29. FWIW : the word vík means inlet or cove, so Vikings were just people who lived around inlets or coves.

Rethestory about brides receiving kittens, but wasn't that the wedding night meal? No, on the wedding night they ate pussy ;-)
