Friday Face OFF -- Tasmanian Devil

For this week's Friday Face OFF link party
of art featuring faces, hosted by Nicole of

I present to you . . . a Tasmanian Devil!

No, NOT THIS ONE who we all know and love
from the old Looney Tunes cartoons --

I mean THIS ONE that I did
in my "Drawing Australia" class!

Apparently, real Tasmanian Devils are
carnivorous marsupials about the size of a small dog.
They have a stocky and muscular build, black fur,
a pungent odour, an extremely loud and disturbing screech,
a keen sense of smell, and ferocious feeding habits.

Our teacher said that this one (from her photo
taken at a zoo) is an older, battle-scarred veteran,
which explains the ragged cauliflower ears.
Nice fangs hanging out of the corners of its mouth, too!

Doesn't it look like it would just chew your arm off?

As usual, this was done freehand
using HB, 2B, 4B and 6B pencils.

🥺 I agree, Marie Smith, those eyes are kinda soulful and the critter looks so misunderstood! Gonna keep my distance though! 😬 Good work, Debra!! 👏

  4. Over in Australia, I wonder if there are towns and cities that put on "Drawing Canada" classes for aspiring artists. 2B or not 2B? Great picture of the Tasmanian devil.

  12. Oh, that’s a great drawing!
I know somebody who got a cartoon Tasmanian Devil when they were very young young and had to retouch it. They are in their fifties now.

    XOXO

  13. Ohhhh Debrah this is excellent. One of my art teachers said if you can get the eyes right you have the piece. You have done that here. Thank you for sharing with FFO and have a great weekend.

  14. Hello Debra, I looked up real Tasmanian devils and perhaps you were recalling your koala drawing a little when you made this. On the other hand, they are trying to re-populate Tasmanian devils, and your drawing would make a good poster-animal to improve their public image

  17. I am really impressed by your drawing skills. Your Tasmanian Devil looks gorgeous, I think seeing a lot of character in his face. He does look older and even a little bit sad - maybe he is hungry? Or just tired. Beautiful work.
