Art Supplies Chit-Chat

[A link party about art issues hosted by

Nicole asked me to share some info
about the art supplies I used in these
recent light-and-shadow pieces
of Winter Soldier and Silhouette Cat.

[Art & photos of art © Debra She Who Seeks, 2026]

In both cases, I used black Stonehenge paper.
This versatile art paper is 100% cotton,
typically 140 lb hot press or cold press,
neutral pH, acid and chlorine free.

I buy it at a local art store in a large 22" x 30" sheet
which typically costs about $10 - $12 (CAD).
Then I fold and rip the sheet into six 10" x 11" individual pieces.

Stonehenge comes in several colours, and is great
for a variety of art applications. I use it for
watercolours, pen and ink, and coloured pencils.

Because the paper has quite a bit of "tooth,"
it can support a lot of layering which is a
necessity for coloured pencils art, in particular.

Black Stonehenge paper has a very dark side
and a slightly less dark side. The very dark side
is the best to work on, so it's important to
check which side is which before starting.

The pen I used is the Uni-ball Signo Broad 1.0 mm
White Gel Ink pen, which costs about $6 (CAD).
It has the exceptionally bright and opaque
white ink needed to stand out boldly on black paper.

On Winter Soldier, I also used a little bit of
Sakura Pen-touch 1.0 mm fine point white marker
(about the same price) --

I used it sparingly as an underlay on his back and front,
and on the more indistinct part of his tactical gear strap.
The Pen-touch white is not as bright and looks greyish
on the black paper compared to the Uni-ball Signo Broad.

Stonehenge paper and both of these pens are available on Amazon.
If going this route, however, I would order pads of Stonehenge paper
rather than sheets, simply for ease and safety of delivery.

  4. I haven't tried the Stonehendge paper, but it comes in a really nice selection of colors. But I do LOVE my Uniball white pens. The gold and silver are pretty nice too. I haven't tried a pen-touch fine point though. I love trying new supplies, and white marking is always needed, so I think I need to keep my eyes open for one of these Pen-touch pens. Thanks for sharing this post Debra.

  7. Hello Debra, No wonder artists need to charge $12.7 million for their efforts, with artists' supplies at these prices. After overhead, there is barely any profit.

  8. Dear Debra, your play of light and shadow looks very professional, and the cotton paper you use seems like a very interesting material. I've never worked with white ink on black paper (only the other way around) – to be precise, I haven't painted or drawn in ages... But I haven't given up hope that one day the muse will kiss me again... (and that I'll find enough time / opportunity to paint at the SAME TIME...)

All the best from Austria, Traude

PS: Yes, I saw in videos that there are apparently discussions in some indigenous nations about whether women are allowed to play the drums. In Langley, that wasn't an issue; there were many women drumming there, and I think the group I filmed was the one that ultimately won.

  9. I love those two pieces. Thanks for sharing your tools with us. I have a "marking tool" addiction. I may need one of those Signo white pens. It woudl be ideal for signing dark paintings - and for adding white highlights.

  11. I am no artist but I know the joy to be found in the tools used in creative work, whether pens and paper for writing or crochet hooks for...crocheting.

  12. First of all, I love the cat painting! It's fabulous.
Thank you for the information on the art supplies you used. I have always been looking for a good white gel pen and have always been disappointed. I never tried the Uniball though, so that will be the one I'm getting.

  19. Thes are stunning pieces of art. You should enter them in a show to let the rest of the world see what you can do. I think the choice of art supplies make a huge difference in the effect you achieve so you not only have talent, you have the smarts to do it right :) Great post!!!

  20. Your art is plain ... I know this word is used up, but I mean it: awesome. Or big WOW. I seldom dare to use black paper and so far if, white pencil. Yours come out much better. When back in Germany (buhuu) I might give gel a go. Or just admire yours :-)

  22. Codex: impressed with these. Try the white Sakura gel pen (the made in Japan is higher quality) only pen that writes on acrylic paint. Flows like a dream.

  27. I have yet to try gel pens but they are enticing. I could end up buying dozens in various hues and never use them.

    Have a lovely day.
