Across the Universe

["and the stars look very different today..."
art by ateazure]

Everyone is very excited about the Artemis II
space mission currently flying around the moon!

So it's time again to consider the vastness
of the universe and our relationship to it!

Okay, that's all I need to hear!

That gif of the Cookie Monster is... me!
Doug? It's Doug now? That's why I couldn't find it, then....

    Love the artwork!

  3. I've been loving the pictures that are being sent back.
The You Are Here hit very close to home, eh?

  4. Cookies! I like that reasoning.Do you remember in the 80s I think it was when newscasters (I’m thinking specifically of Dan Ratther) suddenly started pronouncing it YOUR-an-uss? (An and USS are schwa vowels).

    1. @ Moving with Mitchell -- Yes, I do remember that and thinking WTF? Is "URINE-us" really all that much better than "yer-ANUS"? Only marginally.

  6. I like the sense of proportion about our relative importance in the universe. Maybe my hurty leg is not quite so important. And maybe I could have had an extra pancake this morning..

  7. The slice of chorizo!
Well, my goodness, Uranus is Latinized from the Greek Ouranos. (I just looked that up. LOL) We should've kept the Greek; maybe Doug wouldn't have had to change his name!

  8. There is a roadside attraction (and tourist trap) on Interstate 44 in Missouri called Uranus. They roll out every imaginable pun based on the name.

  9. I wish that there are cookies to the astronauts when they are back on our planet🪩 🤣

  10. I'm glad I don't teach teenagers, I would be a very bad influence on them:)
Thanks for the laughs this morning.

  11. 😹🤓 Love the cat and the nerdy info about Point Nemo and Carl Sagan quote!! But, of course, I gotta tell you about the unhinged jackasses that want to destroy our love of the night sky! 🌌🤬
Elon Musk/Space X and his affiliate Reflect Orbital are planning to put one million more satellites in orbit!! A lot of them could contain mirrors to reflect sunlight onto parts of the Earth at night!! For a huge price, you'll be able to direct reflected sunlight to 5k-wide areas of the planet!
Sounds great. 1M more chunks of space junk, light pollution, disruption of astronomy research, circadian rhythms out of whack, people going nuts with giant lamps switching on or off, "human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, MASS HYSTERIA!" 🤪
    🤬🤬🤬🤬

  13. It's all reminded me of my high school science and astronomy teacher. And he was hot. And every time he said Uranus there was tension.

  14. Ok, the slice of chorizo made cackle! And, Doug.
Well, all of them really. First rate memes!

  16. Okay, so for the Doug. You got an honest to goodness laugh out loud. Pretty flippin' funny. Doug.

  18. I'm worried about us getting closer to the moon. I sure hope we don't ruin that planet, too!

  19. Thanks for the laughs and the great perspective on how big we really are. We're the size of a period at the end of a sentence. :)

  20. That image of dust-mote earth is one that comforts me sometimes. We are so insignificant. Why do we worry so much about the silliest things?

  22. That chorizo is so convincing. It is like Donald Trump science.

  23. These are great and I can relate to the one about saying Uranus to 14 year olds. Having taught high school science for 36 years there were plenty of times I had to say something you knew they were going to react to. Hope it was a great Wednesday.

  24. You know where I first remember hearing that Uranus joke? In E.T., the Extraterrestrial, a movie famous at the time for making people cry, but it also had one good laugh.

  25. "a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam" sounds very pretty. Ha Ha Doug!

  26. I've always loved cookie monster! Considering the vastness we're basically dust.

  29. Not sure why, but the Carl Sagan quote made me cry. It is beautiful, he was a good man. Thanks

  31. I love this post, Debra! I've snagged the Carl Sagan one, and I feel better about my inner Cookie Monster. 😂. I sure hope the Artemis II crew splashes down safely tonight.

  32. Cookie! Seriously, cookies are my big weakness. And all the Artemis news has been a bright spot in a very meh news cycle.
