Yay Argentina!

Number 10 has now arrived to join the list of countries which have legislated same-sex civil marriage equality and it is -- Argentina! Yet another traditionally Catholic country that has defied the Vatican -- love it! Pictured above is Argentina's first married gay couple.

To recap (for those of you who like to keep track) the 10 countries are: Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland and Argentina.

Who will be No. 11?

  3. I seriously doubt that the U.S. will accept this, not as long as organizations such as the tea party are thriving. They don't speak out against it, but some have spoken out that gay marriage should be regulated by the government. Gee I thought that marriage was a sacred vow between two people...why should the government get involved? They cry about how there is too much government regulation. Apparently government involvement is a problem unless it involves a demographic they do not approve of.

  5. One of the problems the right have with gay marriage (and I speak as an ex-fundie) is that they believe marriage is a directive from God (they don't bother to explain why a marriage in a registrar's office is still marriage) and therefore sacred. It all boils down to not wanting to share that sanctity with anyone who isn't following the roolz. If gays can get married, then marriage is no longer sacred.

The fringe right is going so far as to arrange marriages for their children in an attempt to bring it back to "biblical" standards. Insisting that marriage is a sacred institution locks many of these women in loveless marriages that are akin to slavery.

I do have hopes that someday my son will be able to marry the man he loves and I believe it will happen in my lifetime. I don't know what these people will do when it becomes the law of the land. And it will happen eventually.

  6. But haven't spome states in US legislated the same sex marriage?
I have a friend in Massachusetts, who was legally married to his partner in 2004. As far as I understan it, they were among the first couples to do so. What have I missed?

  7. You're right, RA, there are a couple of individual U.S. states where same-sex marriage is legal, but it is not legal in the country as a whole. My list is of countries where marriage equality is legalized for all citizens.

  15. Afraid the USA will be one of the last. At some point the Fed lawmakers will have to overrule the right of the states to hold back this civil right. I am betting on 20 years. Just a wild guess.

  18. YAY! One more country has taken a stand! So glad I live in Canada where I'll be able to see my son marry his partner, should that be what he chooses. However, much more needs to be done to change the mindset of some straights. I'm afraid it is not altogether uncommon for us to hear of gay-bashing in Vancouver.

Still, clearly some progress is being made...thank you, Argentina!
