The Boys of Winter

Isn't it great that the NHL hockey lockout is finally over and a shortened season has been salvaged? I don't know about the USA, but here in Canada the fans are flocking back en masse. All is forgiven!

So now, let's get down to business so we can all start looking forward to the next Stanley Cup playoffs!

And how great was it that the first goal of the first game played after the lockout ended was scored by . . . ? Yes, the Winnipeg Jets! Yay!

[First cartoon by Malcolm Mayes of the Edmonton Journal. Second cartoon by Anthony Jenkins of The Globe and Mail.]

  1. I still have a bad taste in my mouth about it, but it is hard not to get caught up in the excitement o the game. And congrats to the Jets! Everybody in the country is glad to see them back!

  3. I'm so happy to see my Avs back in action. First game we played a fight instantly broke out... I think I teared up a little, I missed it so much...

  7. That second cartoon is sort of disturbing lol. Also RYC: yeah your intuitions are spot on. "Jelly" is from the Latin "gelata", frozen, congealed, which is just the adjectival form of "gelus", the root of "gelid".

  10. Haha! I am that poor guy in the second photo. Not a hockey fan and I was so sick of hearing about the lockout that I'd have started that petition out of pure spite. I am happy for you that your beloved hockey season has been salvaged :)

  11. Hahaha...I'd be lying right next to Jane in that second photo. I'm also not a hockey fan, but recognize that it is a very Canadian tradition. So I am happy for all the fans out there that this game is back.

  13. Of course I didn't have to google "hockey lockout."

I enjoy the love in the first pic, the dedication in the second, and the brotherly love in the third ;-)

  16. Denver is still holding a grudge against their NHL team, the Avalanche. Denver has an awesome minor league team, the Cutthroats (named after a type of trout), and hockey folk quickly became loyal fans! So with ticket prices like they are, hockey fans are still going to see the Cutthroats. The Avs are trying their darndest to woo back the fans.

  17. We had peace for months. I just hope the supporters in Montreal don't get nasty and start breaking things off when they win during the playoffs.

  18. I stopped being a fan of NHL when the Whalers moved to South Carolina and I stopped being a casual fan (AHL hocky) about 9 years ago.

To be honest with everyone, hockey really needs to go away, re-tool, get new ownership and new commissioner who don't live in a bubble.
