Rabbit Cuisine, Part 2

Le Lapin Sauté is not a large restaurant but its interior is cozy and rustic. Naturally, it features a lot of rabbit decor such as this adorable bunny shelf . . .

. . . and these rabbity folk art carvings.

For my meal, I ordered "rabbit with two mustards sauce." As you can see, it came with salad and fries. There were four little pieces of rabbit under a delicious sauce. And yes, it is true what they say -- rabbit tastes just like chicken. However, it is a bit stringier than chicken in texture.

My Rare One was on a fish kick at the time and ordered salmon instead. It too was delicious. But she also sampled my rabbit.

Oh, I enjoyed this so much! But I know that this nice feed of rabbit may have to hold me for years until I'm able to find rabbit on a restaurant menu again.

  1. I was once given rabbit to eat as a child and burst into tears. I know what a hero I am.

  2. I haven't had rabbit for a while. I'm jealous. I also want that shelf... in red.

  3. I would not like fried potatoes with this meal. Did it go well with it?

  4. Love the rabbit decor but I could never muster up the nerve to eat a bunny....

  5. oh, noes, Debs, you ate a bunny????

  6. Really, dear Debra, first you mock the Vikings, now you're devouring rabbits. If I were paranoïd ....

  7. @Spooky Whisk -- I thought it was a little odd too. I was expecting rice or roast/mashed potatoes. Fries seemed a little "casual." But they went well enough with it!

@Silver Bunny -- But I would NEVER mock or harm a Viking rabbit.

  9. The rabbit shelf is cute! And your dinner looks scrumptious! The fries look kinda out-of-place though.....

  10. Oh yes, we definitely need to go to Quebec City. That looks like our kind of restaurant. Looks like a tasty meal. Maybe the fries are out of place, but they sure look delicious.

  11. It looks good...but I just couldn't do it! I would also have ordered the salmon, which I love! I am surprised by the fries. Rice seems like a good fit; roasted veggies even better.

  12. That's interesting. Cool beans that it worked. I don't often get fried potatoes out as they are too heavy and oil-filled. But I do enjoy baking them at home. Nummy stuff.

  13. Ohhhh, the decor is so cute!
I've never had rabbit. But your meal looked very appetizing.

  14. Someone mistakenly put that rabbit next to its old food source. I'll pass on the salad, but that rabbit and fries looks pretty tasty.

  15. I think I just had the onion soup when I was thee. How boring am I?

  16. Ah yes, Rabbit.
Had it when I was a kid. Either my young uncles or my brother would hunt and bring them home. Mother or Grandmother would fry them like southern fried chicken, serve them with mashed potatoes, corn on the cob and a big garden salad.
Can you tell it's dinnertime for me?
I'm off to make chili dogs and serve them with corn chips.
Friday nights are "trash nights" in our house. Trash means fast food type stuff or cold cuts.

  18. Yum?! I had rabbit once years ago....my aunt made a stew of it. I didn't care for it....thought it tasted 'woodsy' or something like that.
Your dish looks very good smothered in that sauce Debra!
Don't see offered much around here lately. As a kid my Dad sold them in his store 'all dressed' and hanging by the front door! I am serious!

  20. You don't find it a little weird that they serve Peter Cottontail and have rabbit decor?

  21. Ughh... Ok, I need to find an excuse to travel to Quebec and eat everything.

  22. You made me want to go and eat there again. This October, maybe. It is a lovely eating place, and with a local beer (I believe the Lapin sauté serves many), the rabbit must be really yummy. I do eat salmon or fish when I go out more than meat, but rabbit being a much rarer delicacy on the menu, I would probably choose this, especially at the Lapin. Most of the time I have rabbit or hare, it is in a tourtière, so the taste gets lost.

Oh, and the sister of my godson LOVES rabbit, so she finds it very cruel to eat it. And my godson loves deers and mooses, he even said when I last saw him that people who kill them are really nasty. So now I feel guilty eating either, even though they are such delicious meats.

  23. Love rustic restaurants! Although I am hard pressed to eat meat of any kind at any time, the dinner looked good!

  24. I was a survival instructor for the US Navy for a number of years. We would teach our students to snare, and clean rabbits; then they would experiment cooking them over a camp fire. I had rabbit weekly - rare or burnt...You are right, it is like dark meat of chicken - the way chicken use to be before hormones and force feeding made them oversize and fatty.

  25. Love salmon but couldn't eat a rabbit..even when i ate meat. I am squeamish:). I like the look of the place though

  26. I remember back in the 80's when a few supermarkets here would sell fresh rabbit in the meat section.

Right now, this post reminds me of the old Looney Tune cartoons where Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck would try to insult each other by reading duck and rabbit receipes.

  27. This looks so cozy inside. I have never eaten rabbit but now that I have been vegetarian for almost 20 years now I don't see it happening in the future. The sauces look delicious!

  28. I LOVE this series of rabbit posts and especially the foodie ones, of course. I am so glad you finally found a place that would actually serve you rabbit. Well done and I have to learn how to make a mustard sauce, looks so good.

  29. I think "sampled my rabbit" sounds like some sort of risque' slang term.
