Watercolour and Ink Sketches

The main thing I learned in July's "Sketching in Pen and Ink and Watercolour" course is that I really need to take a beginners course in watercolours! I was not happy with most of my efforts in this class, but here are the ones I don't mind posting, LOL!

We painted the watercolour wash and spatter background in this first exercise before we knew what picture we'd be drawing in ink over top of it. If I'd known, I would not have chosen these particular colours for my wash! Oh well, just pretend this landscape scene is from an alien planet --

I like these little tomatoes on the vine but wish I'd drawn them bigger on the page.

I'm happy with this fruit still life too. The fruit was supplied by my fridge.

These veggies came out of My Rare One's garden. When I was done, I chopped up the onion and put it on a pizza. Delicious!

Because I'm busy and running around traveling in August and September, I won't be taking another art course until October or so. But I may do some art on my own at home.

  4. @ jaz@octoberfarm -- Thanks so much, Joyce. Artistic talent runs in my father's side of the family so I knew I had some ability, just no training.

  10. I absolutely love those tomatoes - and they are the perfect size on the page, IMHO. You definitely have talent, my dear. As far as watercolor goes, it was always my bugaboo - as my painting instructor told me (often), I had a very heavy hand.

  11. I like all those pictures, even the alien planet. So what, were they assigning you what to draw only after you splashed down the watercolors? That hardly seems fair.

  12. These are great! I don't generally care for watercolor paintings but I like the dark fantasy feel of this one. Now about that onion, next time do a before and after with the pizza :)

  19. Hello Debra, I like them all. The yellow and pink watercolor looks exactly like certain book or magazine illustrations from the 1950's.

  23. I'm happy for you that you found these drawing classes. You are doing great - my veggies would be unrecognizable. Since I've never had any drawing skill, I've always appreciated people who were able to.

  25. The first one is my favorite. I like the still lives, but that first one is frame 😎
And watercolor is not an easy technique, in my eyes. Of course I cannot paint to save my life, so there’s that.

    XoXo

I've dabbled in watercolor and was impressed by how difficult it is! You did great with the shadows, fruits and veggies.
Your first one is nicely detailed too.
In sum, praise and don't condemn yourself!

  33. I think they look great Debra! When I started watercolour, I wasn't happy either. In my case it's because I was trying to paint as though I was using acrylics. I didn't "get" the whole watercolour thing at all. When I just let go and started some abstracts, I felt better with the paintbrush. I think you have great talent, and I actually really like that ink/paint piece a lot!!
