Post of the Week

This week's outstanding post
from the blogosphere is a
sombre reflection on,
and analysis of,
American gun culture
and mass shootings.

It cuts through standard platitudes
and wishful thinking to remind us
of another once-impregnable social reality
which nevertheless reached an
unexpected tipping point of change.

It's a tough template but one that
can instill a bleak sense of hope that
someday this madness too shall end.

No drumroll or fanfare this week,
just the sound of a breaking heart.

  1. I've been thinking of it like the Soviet union, which for most of my youth seemed unbreakable. Then it collapsed. Hoping we get there a lot faster with the gun crisis though.

  5. Cigarettes and guns? I don't smoke and I don't shoot, but I'd rather take my chances with second-hand smoke than second-hand bullets.

  6. All the repubs are screaming about mental illness. I doubt if that kid was mentally ill. He was just pissed about something and had access to guns.

  8. Sometime in the next few days, i will go to the nearest large town again. Just like i always do.
I go to the doctor and the grocery store. If it is an election year, i go to the library to vote.
This town is called Hurricane, Utah and i have some questions for them. After the chores are done, we like to look at the neighborhoods and gardens.
We see these Back the Blue flags everywhere. We also see Lets Go Brandon. It is so fukking weird.

  9. I don't know reason why so many people here in United States, is so hung up on guns.

  10. My personal opinion is that more gun laws won't solve the problem. You need to enforce the myriad of gun laws that are already on the books to begin with. Banning assault rifles is just a mere finger in the dyke when there are larger gun issues that need attention.

Before anyone asks, I am neither extremely pro-gun or extremely pro-gun control. I have a healthy respect for them but I will not own them.

But there is one thing I should point out that no amount of gun control laws take in account (much like other laws designed to "stop" certain crimes but rarely do) the one thing that people seem to forget, both here and elsewhere: a gun is an inanimate object and it takes a human to make it work.

So long as a human is involved in the equation, you will never truly have what people really want.

  13. thanks for the link
stop the madness - yes - but we need more people to admit it is madness. I believe there are some who have not been personally affected and don't really care.

  15. I don't see this ever changing as it rests in the hand of GOP senators, whose base is inveterate to have any gun laws.
Until these politicians go - or change their minds - it won't happen.

  22. I was pretty ground down when I read about the multiple instances of gun violence that happened. As long as politicians keep getting money from the gun lobby, I doubt things will change.
