The S Word
Edmonton awoke to its first snowfall this weekend. Here's a photo taken from my balcony. And so another six months of winter begins . . . .
Goofy Wine Labels
Saw these labels on zero alcohol wine at my grocery store this week. They tickled my legal funny bone.
Female Gazes
Went to an interesting art exhibit of paintings by women of women.
...I enjoy a winter's rest. I look forward to the first snow and the last snow, 6 months of winter is a bit much. In the US it's time to put a woman in charge!
ReplyDeleteFirst snowfall!!!!!!!!! Wtf?!? I would love to live in Canada but those early snowfalls and 6 months of it I couldn't take.
ReplyDeleteThe snow is purty but you can have all six months of it.
ReplyDeleteI would be found Guilty of never drinking zero alcohol wine; but that's just me.
I love Beneath the Sunlit Surface.
Well, I recently read (I have no idea why) that it can snow as early as November in Edmonton. So there you have it! It IS beautiful. Very clever wine labels. The art exhibit must have been a joy. I especially like the first, but do like all of these. The title ”Invisible but not finished” says so much.
ReplyDeleteS. Colorado is known for snow on Halloween, but not this year! However, it ❄️ is forecast for the end of the week! Boo! Hiss!
ReplyDeleteI lived in Wisconsin a while back. Always a white November Thanksgiving. And that was it till about April! Where I live now often there's no snow till mid December. I like this better.
ReplyDeleteAlso your wine labels! And the women's gaze, great.
if trump wins i'm heading to edmonton. i need 6 months of winter. it is going to be in the 80's on tuesday. i could just spit. i love the justina smith piece.
ReplyDeleteHello Debra, I like the four examples you chose from the exhibition--each so different but perfect in its own way. These artists all seem to be newer ones. Hels just posted a photo in her blog of Berthe Morisot's famous The Cradle picture. (Since she posted it at the end of October, she should not have been surprised that I compared this classic painting to the horror movie Who Slew Auntie Roo (with Shelley Winters), although the resemblance is undeniable.
ReplyDelete.
These days it seems that there are more female artists--at least in various Yale Meet the Artist Zoom series which I have been following for several years. It may have featured one male artist, but mostly it is a solid block of talented female artists who have a fascinating take on feminism or on society. Still, the virtually entire lack of male artists is a bit disquieting.

Here is the link to the next free Zoom presentation with artist Helen Marten on 11/8 at Eastern time noon-1pm:

The S word, and it is not sex.
ReplyDeleteThose are four interesting pieces! Love that last one!
ReplyDeleteLove the first one and the second one is rather poignant. Snow? Already?
ReplyDeleteI think I would have had the gold lady blowing bubbles too.
ReplyDeleteThat first picture? If I were MacGyver I would be able to figure out exactly where you lived. Why did I think of that? Because he did that on an episode last night.
The 'S' word... turns out to be Snow! We enjoy a snowfall here in my city but that's because it's fairly rare. Rain and gray skies are our norm. Stay warm...
ReplyDeleteThe wine bottles are the opposites of the '19 Crimes' brand with pictures of Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart among other criminals as their labels. Very clever.
I love the concept of the Female Gazes exhibit! The four you have picked out are fantastic!
@ e -- Oh, I didn't know about the "19 Crimes" wine labels -- too funny! Thanks for educating me!
DeleteThese paintings are fabulous
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked that we've had zero snow yet. So shocked. Not complaining. I like snow though a warm winter won't hurt my feelings either. Until we move, then I'd love a good chilly winter in the new home.
ReplyDeleteZero alcoholic wine? Isn't that grape juice?
ReplyDeleteI still miss snow. Those wine labels tickled me too. The paintings show a beautiful vibrant use of color, which I love in paintings.
ReplyDeleteInvisible but not finished - what a lovely title and explanation for women growing older.
ReplyDeleteI love those wine labels.
ReplyDeleteThe paintings are lovely. No snow in Regina yet. +10C outside.
ReplyDeleteI know for you winter is miserable and cold. But at least it looks pretty.
ReplyDeleteAll we have is mud
Beautiful art work. I especially loved the first and last ones
I remember as a boy so wanting snow in November to make it feel like the pending holidays.
ReplyDeleteFor all my life, until two years ago, I lived in the primary or secondary snow belt, fueled by Lake Erie. Now I'm in a lesser snow area. What a difference.
ReplyDeleteI would NOT be ready for snow! This is a great collection of artwork-the one that spoke most to me was "Invisible but not finished".
ReplyDeleteSnow? I am so not ready! (We're 59 right now at 8:23). Thanks for coming by. I would have loved that exhibit. And the wine labels are loads of fun! I just realized you have a follower button so now I'm following!
ReplyDeleteCorrect that. I tried to follow but it said it failed. What is up with blogger lately? Everyone is coming in no-reply, even if they normally don't, and you are the second blog I've tried to follow in the last couple of days to no avail. Oh well -- it's free.
ReplyDelete@ Jeanie -- Thanks for letting me know that the Follow gadget is not working. Blogger is so frustrating!
DeleteThose are fun wine bottle designs. I really like that Carrigall painting. Something about underwater paintings which I had seen a few that just serene to me.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day.
I don't miss snow until I see it. Then I wish I could be there. (for a short time of course) LOVE these paintings. Invisible but not finished is my favorite even though you didn't ask. :-)
ReplyDeletehaha.. love the not guilty labels.
ReplyDeleteI like the Beneath the Surface art.
Snow! Nope.. not ready for that yet.
I unfollowed and then followed you. It worked OK for me. I used the Chrome browser.
ReplyDelete@ Mike -- Thanks for that info, Mike! And for taking the time to check!
DeleteGoodness, six months of winter? Wow! Some nice art there. So, do you drink no alcohol wine? I’ll drink low alcohol wine, but not no alcohol. You might as well have fruit juice, which is nice, and healthy.
ReplyDelete@ Sue Bursztynski -- Because I'm diabetic, I rarely drink any alcohol at all, whether full, reduced or non alcohol in content. Never drink fruit juice either, for the same reason. I just happened to be walking down that particular grocery aisle and saw the bottles which caught my eye and amused me!
DeleteUgh, snow! We're in our third day of snow, and it's supposed to snow until tomorrow night. I would have loved to see the "Female Gazes" exhibit. I like the ones you choose to share. It's funny, I'm seeing Frida Kahlo everywhere, and I only became aware of her a few months ago. There was an intriguing photo hanging in Las Fajitas and I asked our waitress about it. She said she had painted it, and it was a copy of a famous Mexican artist's self-portrait. When I got home, I hunted online for the painting. Our waitress Yvonne had made a perfect copy. She and I both struggle to find time for our passions, lol! She works 50 hours plus per week at the local Mexican restaurant we love. I hope that you are enjoying yourself despite the arrival of winter, my friend!
ReplyDeleteseems late for the first snow... when I lived there long ago, seems it started late Sept. ended in May. We are mid 4 day snow storm here in colorado. Got about 10" in two days but Friday could be another 7-10" the thing here is the sun at our altitude melts it often. LeeAnna
ReplyDelete@ LA Paylor -- You're right, LeeAnna! Edmonton had a nice long Fall this year. The kids always appreciate a Halloween without snow!
DeleteI'm sure a revisit of winter/snow is lovely, until you've had six months of it. Stay warm! Love the art work, as well as the cheeky bottles of wine!
