Ha ha, this made me LOL! But really, I love Scottish people. Bagpipes, och aye! Curling, too. Even golf is tolerable. And of course who doesn't love the wee Scotsman on the Canadian Tire money?! Any other ethnic group would be outraged to be depicted as the epitome of cheapness and thrift. But not Scots! They revel in their reputed tightfistedness!
Bagpipes playing a mournful song on a hill always bring me to tears...and those adorable men with great legs in a skirt!
ReplyDeletemy grandfather was scottish and when he died we found piles of journals where he logged every single cent he ever spent. he even marked down 5 cents for his beloved green lifesavers.

ReplyDeleteSorry, should have explained Canadian Tire money a bit more fully for non-Canuckians. When you buy something at Cdn Tire and pay for it in cash (not by credit card), you get 5 cents or 10 cents worth of Cdn Tire money. It's like points, green stamps or a loyalty reward. You can spend the Cdn Tire money on future items at the store. Cdn Tire money is a cultural institution in Canada! And oh yes, Cdn Tire sells much more than tires!

My favorite think about the scotts, is their "Great Scotts" with all their kilts and what's beneath them, sighh...Have you seen the movie, "So I married an Axe murderer" with Mike Meyers. One of my fave. movies and he has a really fun way with the Scotts. Thank you for bringing a little Scottish life today, lassie ; )

ReplyDeleteI have to say I am a sucker for a Scottish accent...there was a boy/young man in school with me as an exchange student at Phila Textile when I was there...we were both Knitting majors...oh, I'd melt every time he opened his mouth (I was already married then, but I could still appreciate an adorable accent!)
Yes, Catpriestess, no one skewers the Scots like Mike Myers! I haven't seen the Axe Murderer movie, but love his other memorable Scottish-inspired characters like Fat Bastard and Shrek!

Hi Cora -- No, I haven't read the Outlander series. Didn't they make movies out of those books, or maybe it was a TV series? I did try to read Trainspotting once though, which is written in phonetic Scots English, but it took so long to sound everything out that I gave up. Besides, too depressing to read about heroin addiction.

when we first move to Woodford, our neighbours were from Scotland and yes, he hated to part with his money.. I have links to Scotland in my family tree, but didn't inherit their thriftiness!

ReplyDeleteYou can see Wallace's monument from my Gran's back garden. It was never visited by a soul until Braveheart and now there are coach loads there every day...
They have even made a stone monument at the moment with Mel Gibson's face... I'm not sure Wallace would be that impressed ;0)

ReplyDeleteI second the Mike Myers comment! He did a skit once on SNL where he was the owner of a store called "All Things Scottish." And when a customer came in the door, bagpipes would sound instead of a bell, and his greeting was: "Welcome to All Things Scottish, and if it's not Scottish...its crap!" Lol - I still say this to my friends.
