Time to visit another Edmonton labyrinth! This one is not far from the University of Alberta at the Belgravia Arts Park. It's a 7-circuit Cretan labyrinth made of inlaid bricks.
We had a heck of a time finding it in the park last summer because the overgrown grass hid the labyrinth from easy view. Nor was there any signage to indicate its presence. But My Rare One spotted a rock sitting all by itself in a corner of the park and sure enough, it proved to be the centre of the labyrinth.
Well, technically the rock is off-centre. It's sort of beside the centre of the labyrinth. I'm not sure why the labyrinth was designed this way but it is certainly unique in that regard.
Unlike a rock labyrinth on grass, a labyrinth made of inlaid bricks which are flush to the ground can be mowed easily with a conventional or riding lawn mower. Now all the City of Edmonton has to do is mow this one a bit more often so people know it's there!
Really...what good is a labyrinth if no one can find it? I bet it would look really nice if it was maintained on a regular basis! Perhaps post a sign announcing its presence...
ReplyDeleteI do see lots of clover for the bees, though.
ReplyDeleteI hope to see this one day, soon,
ReplyDeleteI like this park...neat
ReplyDeleteOK...now I'm on a mission to find one in the KC area. There's got to be one...
ReplyDeleteI love this labyrinth. It's lovely.
ReplyDeleteCool, I didn't even know this park existed! I just took a google tour to see I could spot the rock :)
ReplyDeleteThere is a new labyrinth in town and your post reminds me that I need to go walk it!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe hardest part of the labyrinth is not solving it, but finding it in the first place. Trickery all around!
ReplyDeleteWe don't have any labyrinths around here. I wish we did. They're very beautiful. However, this is America the fat, and since it doesn't involve a McDonald's cheeseburger and you have to walk to get through it, well, we won't be seeing one of those any time soon...
It's lovely. I'd love to walk this one.
ReplyDeleteMary
This labyrinth looks like something you would find near Stonehenge, just beautiful...
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Love labyrinths. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
That is so cool. I wonder if we have anything like that here in Ontario. Surely a province this book and so overloaded with parks must have one!
ReplyDelete~i always love when you share your labyrinth journies with us...beautiful and happy your rare one was able to spot the rock! much love light and blessings~
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post..gorgeous labyrinth...I love them and the magic they carry...beautiful photos...
ReplyDeleteI am all for a good Labyrinth... David Bowie included or not! Hey maybe someone should make a labyrinth that looks exactly like David Bowie?
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely journey, Debra! I think that one is the nicest one that I've seen you post so far. Of course I haven't seen them in person. I wonder if you have a favourite?
ReplyDeleteFrancie, I love them all! Each one is unique in its own way.
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly the kind of labyrinth I want to build in my backyard someday, to the point where I put a single brick down, dug into the level of the grass, as a test. But it got overgrown pretty quickly. So now I'm wondering if a brick just isn't wide enough, and those concrete pavers would be better (though I think they're ugly and would much rather have brick). It looks like the ones in the Edmonton labyrinth are laid down with some cement? That would keep the weeds from growing in between the bricks.
ReplyDeleteYou can see I've been thinking about this. The low-maintenance part is key.
I love how you find these! Until you blog I would have said Edmonton had no labyrinths. I so enjoy these discoveries.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I never knew Edmonton had any until I started reading your posts Debra. I think this one is really cool. have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if we can build one here in the apt complex?
ReplyDeleteI love your labyrinth journeys, too! I'm amazed at the diversity. I really do need to look for some in SoCal. I'd love to walk one. Good for you for your persistence in finding this little gem!
ReplyDeleteHi Debra! Oh, I love places like this, beautiful and thought provoking!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the inlaid bricks! And the designs is unique. Seems that more and more cities/communities are installing labyrinths. Most cool!
