Yay, It's Oscar Night!

Don't you just LOVE the Oscars? I do. I've watched them every year since I was a kid. Here are my fearless predictions for the top categories to be awarded this evening:

Best Supporting Actor: Barkhad Abdi, "Captain Phillips." Just because he ad-libbed the best, most chilling line in the entire movie: "I am the captain now."

Best Supporting Actress: Lupito Nyong'o, "12 Years a Slave." She is amazing in that most distressing of all movies.

Best Actor: This is a toughie but I'm going with Matthew McConaughey, "Dallas Buyers Club." Hollywood loves anyone who gets skinny for a role.

Best Actress: Everyone says this is Amy Adams' year to finally win an Oscar. She's not a particular fave of mine and I thought her part in "American Hustle" largely involved just showing a lot of cleavage but okay, I'll go along with majority opinion here.

Best Picture: "12 Years a Slave," if there's any justice in this world.

Best Director: Steve McQueen, "12 Years a Slave." That agonizingly long-held shot of the tippytoes hanging/strangulation scene was brilliant direction of unspeakable horror. Appalling and haunting, all at the same time.

So we'll see tonight how right or wrong I turn out to be! But there's no contest about the next award. The Oscar for Sexiest Butch in a Tux goes to . . . .

  1. My guesses:

Best supporting actor: Barkhad Abdi (creepy)
    Best supporting actress: no idea
Best actor: Matthew McConaughey (he really is brilliant in this film; he made such an improvement over the past couple of years)
Best actress: Cate Blanchett (female actresses don't get much better than that)
Best picture: Twelve Years A Slave (haven't actually seen that one yet, but I believe all the others)
Best foreign film: The Broken Circle Breakdown (because it's a Belgian film ;-) )

  2. I'll be watching. I haven't seen any of the movies -- very rare to "go to the movies", but I do like watching the Oscars ... talk about another world! ;)

  3. I haven't seen enough of the movies to justify me making any predictions, but has anyone else ever noticed that Matthew McConaughey's arms are too short? Seriously... check them out. Short armed man.... must mean something? I must blog about this!

  4. Amy stands almost no chance to win the Oscar this year, Debs. Blanchett is taking it home. And Fassy will probably take supporting actor one. The rest you got right :)
I'd love for PHILOMENA to take best film and beat all the big studio films in the race :)

  5. Great predictions.. and yes.. we're agreed on a few!!. It's exciting, I haven't seen all the movies, but I have heard that Dallas Buyers Club was brilliant.

I think it will show here in the early hours of the morning but I'm not sure which channel. will have to locate.
    Roll on the glitz! :))

  6. Hi Debra,
Can't say I watch but I'm always interested to learn after the event who the winners are. I then plan my movie viewing around the results because if a film wins an Oscar it must be good, right?

Sadly, I haven't seen any of those mentioned. Note to self, must watch more films :-)

Enjoy oscar night! Have a bubbly for me.

  7. I've always enjoyed watching the Oscars to see the wild clothes some of the Celebs wear. And for the shots of the audience during the ceremony in hopes of seeing a celeb picking their nose!

  8. I'm watching the Oscars even though David will be watching The Walking Dead and a few other things.

I'm wondering if they will give it to DiCaprio just to make him happy. He should have gotten it for What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He was great in that movie.

  9. I can see 12 Years getting best picture though if it doesn't then Gravity will probably be it.

  10. I love the red carpet...I haven't seen a lot of the movies but they're on my Netflix list..It's tough to pick just one..

  11. I hope I can watch them. I may just PVR them and watch them after the hubby leaves. We have such opposing viewing habits!

  13. I haven't seen any of the movies this year. That is unheard of for me but for whatever reason didn't go to the movies much.

I have heard that 12 Years a Slave is incredible but I can't imagine watching it. Brutality and hatred, make me so sad and so angry..it would take me weeks to get past it.

I will still watch the Oscars though. I always enjoy the program.

  14. I like how your predictions are all over the place thus rewarding a variety of interesting films. It doesn't really matter to me but I am interested in the warm playful vibe Ellen will bring to the whole over-the-top-ness of it all. Wasn't she vacuuming the floor or something like that the first time she hosted? #greatstuff

  15. I don't watch the Oscars because I rarely get an opportunity to go to a movie. That said, I think Ellen is hilarious and I just may watch because of her.

  16. Well, I have to say I've only seen two Oscars. I would love to watch it with Ellen hosting, though. I enjoy her so much. Hope you have a great time watching! Hugs,

  17. Betty made you late??? The old bugger LOL, most us Aussies have a healthy dislike for royality other entertainment value (& even then, I find them dull LOL) Ellen is the best looking person in a tux since Hugh Jackman hosted, I must remember to tune in! Ohh, outside of Cate Blanchett & probably best costumes 'great Gatsby' I haven't really an idea :)

  18. Yep Ellen sure looks good, I love the way she gets a little more butch every time I see her, and no longer feels she has to compromise her look.

I really enjoyed the film Captain Philips.

  19. Wouldn't it be funny if Ellen came out all dressed up in one of those mermaid gowns? Now, if she does it, we will know she reads your blog! LOL!!

  20. I just want Cate Blanchett to win best actress. She deserves it. She always does, but this time, with Blue Jasmine, she deserves it even more. She was simply mesmerizing.

  23. I think Ellen looks fabulous. I love that woman. She is hilarious. I used to watch her on the 'Ellen' show back in the 90s. I haven't watched the Oscars in years. Just stopped at one point and never got into it again. We'll see if I tune in tonight at all. But hey, you have fun!

  24. Am I the only person who isn't watching that? Ellen does look great in a tux!

  28. Man, I'm tired for staying up so late to watch the Oscars! Really happy that Cate Blanchett won!, She's one of my favorite actors! There was some pretty fierce competition out there, but I'm pretty happy for all the winners.
