Today is the Lunar New Year, so welcome to the Year of the Pig, everyone! Gung hey fat choy!
What can we expect in a Pig Year? According to Susan Levitt and Jean Tang in Taoist Astrology, the Year of the Pig (or Boar) is:
Well, that sounds great, doesn't it? At least until the bills come in. Sort of like Christmas!
My Rare One and I celebrated the Lunar New Year a couple of weeks ago at West Edmonton Mall. It's an annual event showcasing the local Asian community and featuring fun, entertainment, and games of luck and good fortune! Here we are, looking suitably festive --
And finally -- to guarantee good luck and prosperity for the upcoming year, be sure to exchange a small coin with a friend today -- click here for details of this fun little ritual! My Rare One and I do this every Lunar New Year!

you two are adorable! USA pennies, eh? :-)
Wait till you see what I did at work!
Year of the Pig?
Sounds positively gluttonous!
I was born in the Year of the Pig. They say I should find some abundance this year. I sure do hope so. I need it. And it should be quite interesting in my neighborhood today. I live one block from the main street in Brooklyn's Chinatown. Last year there was lots of colorful parades, moon cakes on every corner, and fireworks.
Love.
What a fun post...informative, too. Glad you had fun.
Oh, and thanks for coming by to wish son a happy b'day. He is indeed slimming down. He opened a fitness business and the whole family is getting healthy with all the workouts...Now, that being said, I on the other hand, am waaaay too old for that kind of workout. I will just wait for hot weather and do my thing in the pool. :)
I could use a little indulgence.
Fun times. Let's hope for a very prosperous, healthy, lucky, happy and wealthy new year.
Indulgence here I come!!! :) I'm sure a lot of youngsters wouldn't even recognize what you have in your hand there Debra lol...I haven't seen a penny in years. Happy New Year!!! :)
A Happy Chinese New Year to you and your Rare One!!
Let's hope our politicians read this!
Lovely to see a photo of you and your Rare One. You look so happy.
Gung Hey Fat Choy. I'm going with emphasis on indulgence - celebrating with friends at a local Chinese Food eatery. But we must celebrate all year, I assume. Kosher pork eggrolls it shall be!
Happy Chinese New Year, Debra and Rare One. HRH too.
So, where are you taking us for an 'Extravagant vacation' in the year of the pig, Debs? :)
Happy Chinese New Year, friend D … I am a goat, that gave birth to a rat, a tiger and … you guessed it … a pig … The rat is doing well, the tiger died young, and the pig assures me that she is as happy as can be. Don't worry, be happy says this ole goat, hmmm? Anyway … Much love, cat.
Hello Debra, Another great photo of you two, and Happy New Year to both of you! I haven't heard of the coin ritual, but it makes sense. I did just get a small coin from (Mainland) China the other day (their 5-cent coins look a lot like our $1 coins)--perhaps that is a good sign that they are sending me some extra luck from over there!

Some self-indulgence would do me a world of good and we should all be a little kinder to each other.
Great photo of you both! Happy Chinese Year to you!
May you and your Rare One have a prosperous new year.
I plan to celebrate with a bacon sandwich.
the Ol'Buzzard
Look how cute yall are!!! Happy Chinese New Year!!
Gung hey fat choy, to you as well. I have a good feeling about this one.
Great photo! Happy New Year of the Pig!
Woops! Missed my chance to exchange a coin. Gave coins away though. Does that count? (I love seeing photos of you and your Rare One!)
Can I get a Canadian penny?
oh wait.
Such a fun post. I love the photo of the two of you. A Happy Chinese New Year to both of you!
" ... a time of peace, understanding, harmony, and fellowship. Ease and enjoyment of the good life will be valued more than power and status. People can be kinder to each other in everyday interactions and feel little need for competition."
Ha ha ... good one! Maybe in the next world.
A woman from China once told me that gung hey fat choi doesn't actually mean "happy New year." she said it translates roughly as "may you make a lot of money this year." Not really relevant to your post, but I found it interesting.
This sounds like a crazy and wild year!
Lavish abundance does sound quite appealing. A double bacon sandwich tonight, perhaps ………….
@ Professor Chaos -- Interesting! It makes sense though because good fortune (meaning money in particular) plays a big role in New Year's festivities and wishes. They give red packets with money in them to kids and others, or chocolate coins as gifts. I received and ate a couple of chocolate toonies ar West Edmonton Mall!
You are speaking my language right now. Year of the Pig is perfect for me. Especially since I brought home a dozen doughnuts today. Now I don't feel guilty. Also, what a wonderful picture!
Elsie
Nice picture..too late to exchange a coin..Maybe I could go outside and flag someone down...Year of the pig..sounds like my kind of year..self indulgence..all for it!!!
You two are so cute! Here's to a great year!
Powerful paragraph you shared here dear Debra!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy lunar year to you and your Rare one :)

A happy and prosperous Year of the Pig to you and your Rare One. That event sounds like a blast.
Here in the Southwest it is The year of the Javelina.
Gung Hey Fat Choy to you and your Rare One! Loved the photo of you two. I hope the Earth Pig can do something to help my country which has seriously gone off its tracks.
