Earlier this month, Jenn of Coffee on the Porch with Me wrote about stubbing and breaking one of her baby toes (click here to read her post). YOUCH!
This reminded me of my own painful experience in this area. Thirty-five years ago, I broke a baby toe one morning while stumbling around still half asleep and stubbing my bare foot against my full, heavy briefcase sitting on the floor.
It hurt so much I couldn't even SWEAR. I just stood there, bent over in incredible pain, my mouth silently opening and closing like a goddamn fish.
Broken baby toes can't really be set or fixed by doctors. So I followed the time-honoured procedure of simply taping it to my other toes, wearing tight, supportive shoes and limping around until it healed (which took forever). Even now, decades later, it still occasionally aches from arthritis due to that ancient breakage.
That was the end of my going barefoot at home, too. Since then, I always wear sturdy slippers to protect my toes against occasional, but inevitable, incidents of stubbing.

Got ya beat. One night as was returning to bed from a nature call, I neglected to feel out for the bed first (I often do this to avoid the situation your post is about) so that I could safely walk around it. End result was basically ripping out (yes, you read that correctly) about 95% of my big toe nail from the toe nail bed. took about a month before a new nail grew enough for me to carefully remove the old nail.
Fun times.
Stubbing your toe is really really painful and I am sure that it is something that most of us have done. It makes me winch just to even think about it.
you nailed it so well dear Debra
not baby one but i hurt my both toes and not in my childhood but teenage .
both times i lost my nail completely and needless to say it took so long to heal and get nail back .
i wonder why i did not post about it ,may be i will in some time
Love the toe rocks. Little toes are too vulnerable.
Been there done that to three toes at once including the little one - OUCH!
Good thing your funny bone isn't one of your toes, Sporticus!
porcellus plorans domum
Been there; done that... OW!!!
Glad I could inspire your post, haha! I LOVED this - they were very funny! I'm actually able to wear my Birkenstocks now which makes me very happy (still taping) but can't even imagine jamming my foot into an actual shoe.
I'm wondering what your profession was that you had a super heavy briefcase. Did you star on Law and Order?? -Jenn
I don't think I've ever hit my little toes that bad. Now my big toes are a different story.
OUCH!
My husband noticed some discoloration on both of his big toes. We thought it was fungus. Was not. Turns out he had some sort of trauma to his toes a couple of years ago and had two nails growing on top of each other?! And the top layer was dying hence the weird color and cracking.. the doc had to cut away a lot of his top nail and now it just looks so messed up until the new nail grows back fully..
Ouch, Debra! I broke my second and third toes walking into a piece of furniture four or five years ago. They healed in a humped up position and have arthritis in them. I no longer go barefoot either. Thanks for showcasing a little humor on the subject!
Ohhhh
I totally believe that just sitting there and not being able to utter even a 'fuck!'. Stubbing a toe is terrible.
I've never done it but I tend to hit my shins quite often. I have no idea why.
XOXO
OMG! These were funny and so very true! Last time I banged around in the middle of the night it was my knee cap meeting the very sharp corner of the bed frame. Try getting back to sleep after that... ugh!
Those statue faces are just perfect!
Think of me then with an extra little toe ...
I keep hitting my knees and that hurts more than my toes have
i stepped on a popcorn kernel this morning. bad stuff came out of my mouth!
The starfish is so on point!
Ow. Even thinking about this hurts.
@coffeeontheporchwithme -- I think Debra was a drug mule in her heyday... undercover, of course, LOL!
Hello Debra, I don't know why you single out little toes. I sometimes get ingrown toenails and that is always the toe that stubs against the furniture.
--Jim
So it doesn't only happen to me?
@ Tundra Bunny -- I told you never to tell anyone that!
You got nothin' to worry about as long as HRH keeps her Glock stocked and cocked, LOL!
@ Tundra Bunny -- Yeah, there's no better drug lord than HRH. She taught El Chapo everything he knew.
@ Tundra Bunny and Debra She Who Seeks -- IT'S ABOUT TIME I GOT THE THANKS I DESERVE!
Ouch! This is a reminder to use all to watch our steps! Stubbing the toe is so painful that I can't even imagine it being worse by breakage.
I wear a slipper or sandals around the house that have a hard sole in case I come across a palmetto bug and need to give it a thorough stomping. I also like to protect my toes. I have my bed right next to the door to the master bath so I can't possibly hurt myself on the way. There. Now I've written it, which means I'll probably stub all my toes and break them on the way to the bathroom at night.
Love,
Janie
I've had too many toe stubs to count, practically daily. Yikes and ouch.
I remove shoes and put on slippers. I go to bed and remove slippers. I do not use my bare feet anywhere save in the shower. I learned, long ago.
Ouch! I don't think I have ever broken a toe.
Oh yes! to every one! I have stubbed toes many times (though not broken any) and also wear shoes around the house so nothing jumps in front of me and - SURPRISE! grabs an unsuspecting toe.
What a great post topic..I doubt that there are any of ue who haven't experienced that at least once..Ouchie!!
You stubbed this post. Stub On!
I forgot to wear my house clogs and stubbed my little toe on the kitchen stool. I cussed like a Longshoreman. David said he didn't know those words.
I stubbed and broke my big toe a year ago Christmas. It was a full year healing!! It still reminds me when rain is coming.
I have felt this pain before, and am feeling it again just reading this post!
I'll tell you what hurts. Where I work there are hampers of clothes. Usually I push them from behind, but sometimes, like if I'm moving two, I'll pull one from behind. And if I pull too hard, the bottom of the hamper will jump up and clip my heel. OUCH!
Ouch! That really hurts! And this table meme is so true!
xoxo

I tend to stub my big toes, also very painful!
Ha! That last meme is all too relatable, but I rolled my ankle (feet should not bend at the angle mine did) instead of broke my pinky toe. I am glad I have never had the experience of breaking one, but boy did I holler during that ankle mishap.
I bang my pinkie toes so often that there is hardly a nail left on them; I'm just painting SKIN when I get my toes 'did'. I suppose I'm lucky I've not broken one yet. But maybe TODAY'S THE DAY?!
broke same little toe twice ............who knew I knew so many curse words..
ouch indeed.
HAHAHAHA! That last photo. Sounds awful about injuring those little toes. I'm so grateful I've never experienced that. I hope I never do!
So painful!! Ouch!!!!
Ahhh... Pinterest ideas pay off: slice a pool noodle lengthwise, wrap around bed leg. If your bed skirt is long enough, no one sees, just the toe;)
