Friday Face OFF -- Bobcat

For this week's Friday Face OFF link party
of art featuring faces, hosted by Nicole of

Here's a bobcat peeking out
from behind a tree which
I did in coloured pencils.

Its white whiskers are created using
the technique of embossing.

Before any colour is applied, the whiskers
are essentially engraved on the paper
 with pressure from a stylus.

Once the bobcat is coloured,
the whiskers then show up as white against it.

My favourite part of this piece
is the bobcat's little pink tongue!
It was done using light pink,
dark pink and violet.

Great drawing. Interesting idea about engraving the whiskers before coloring the rest of the cat.

Love it. I'd never heard of the embossing technique but it's very cool.

What a clever idea with the embossing. I never would have dreamed but now that you point it out, it makes perfect sense.

Very good piece of art. And thanks for telling us how you did the whiskers. Otherwise, I would have though you laid down some pieces of string and verrrry carefully colored around them.

Gorgeous artwork and you're right about the best part...I mean if it doesn't show its tongue, is it really a cat?! 😻

I think that's a pretty incredible illustration. I understand colored pencils can be very hard to work with.

Hello Debra, A beautiful portrait with amazing textures. I also like the blue background texture. How can you create such an even texture over such a large area, with pencils yet?

The pink tongue is a masterwork. I've got the pencils. I'll await your arrival — and expertise.

He looks like a very cheeky bobcat.
Up to something I’d say.
Brilliant work

@ Parnassus (Jim) -- Oh, I can't take any credit for that background texture. The blue background is just a very light shading of blue and the texture of the art paper itself (Stonehenge brand) is simply showing through it. You don't see the texture in the rest of the piece because there's several layers of colour there which cover it more completely.

@ Moving with Mitchell -- Thanks for your kind words but the expertise here belongs to the instructor who taught the embossing technique! As well as everything else, lol.

Good effort, Debra -- the tree bark looks real!

Another masterpiece by Debra! What kind of tree is that? 😄

Striking, Debra! That tongue looks positively real. I had no idea that you could create whiskers like that! Hugs to you!

@ Mike -- Apart from it being a deciduous tree of some description, I have no clue whatsoever!

Hey, let's pretend that we are all secretly pagan and pretend that we are all looking at garden catalogs? There, doesn't that look nice?

Love the Bobcat..I never thought of embossing things like whiskers..I could have/should have done that with my recent cat. Instead I used masking fluid which can be a real pain..Cute tongue...
