Some Not-So-Serious Music

And speaking of Bach . . . .

Well, someone's putting on the dog!

And this bunch is putting on the cat!

Here's a handy cheat sheet for identifying composers . . . .

Let's end with some Mozart . . . .

I recently watched the new series remake of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus. To be blunt, it cannot hold a candle to the 1984 film made by Miloš Forman. To the piecemeal extent that the remake's screenplay still uses Peter Shaffer's original script, it attains some depth. But the additional dialogue and scenes inserted into the screenplay to make it more "hip, contemporary and relatable to today's audience" are appallingly superficial and jarringly out of place. Ordinarily, I quite like Paul Bettany (Salieri) as an actor who is capable of great subtlety and depth of portrayal. While he did bring some excellent heart and soul to the climactic moments from the original script, he was otherwise completely wasted here.

Can only give this series 2 out of 5 stars, unfortunately.

Such an excellent cast. Such a shame. I have it on our list and am disappointed to learn your impressions (I trust your judgment).

I meant to add: The memes are exceptional. The Whom! Pull Handel to Open.

A good collection!!
to which I add another..
in a concert "it says here in the programme that this is Chopin" says one...the other replies "sounds more like sawin' to me"....

Being a lover of classical music these were a hoot!!! And that movie got a remake too??? What's with all the remakes? They are seldom as good as their original. Hollywood must be out of ideas.

...thanks for the cheat sheet for identifying composers.

I groaned at many of these, and then laughed.
That new Amadeus hasn't aired here yet but sounded interesting; I may watch just to see the comparisons to the original.

The photo with the black birds...stunning! It really does look like musical notes. I enjoyed the original Amadeus film too!

My favorite is the birds, so sweet.

I'm not much of an authority on classical music but I still enjoyed the memes.

Amadeus 1984, brilliant, go ahead and remake it for a younger audience, I won't be watching. I am of an age where I enjoy languishing in the oldie, originals. Nothing will ever compare to the dark bleakness of the B/W Wuthering Heights 1939, with the rugged masculinity of Sir Laurence Olivier and the exotic beauty of Merle Oberon as Heathcliff and Cathy.

We are headed to the NSO this evening, while they still exist, and before some moron tears down symphony hall.

The birds are great, Debra. And Thomas.

🥰 Whoa! This 71 year-old Marvel fangirl could listen to Jarvis all day and watch Vision hover in spandex all night, but I'm afraid Paul Bettany would not win my heart over F. Murray Abraham as Salieri.
Abraham's portrayal of sheer delight (and pain) in the hatred of God's nasty little creature, Mozart, just cannot be bested! 🤩
🤨 On another topic, I hope Sly doesn't push Ahh-nold too hard about "being Bach." It could get the whole project terminated! 🤭

The whom! And the Flintstones, too funny.

"The Whom" lol.

The meme with the birds is prime. I can almost hear it. Not the birds, the musical score.

I laughed my way through these, thanks! I think the birds on wire score looks pretty chaotic - might be Vivaldi with all those violin high notes.
The 1984 version of Amadeus was 'chef's kiss'!

What a great collection of 'not-so-serious' music! The 'Whom' and the birds on the wire looking like notes were my favorites. Thanks for the heads-up on the Amadeus remake, too—I’m a fan of Paul Bettany, but it sounds like even he couldn't save a superficial script.

Holst did some great music as did the others. I listened to classical as a kid when dad was around and country when mom was around.
We listened to Rock when mom and dad were gone!

"Maybe God doesn't speak to you because you bore him" Hah! I have never seen Amadeus.

The violins-as-weapons reminded me of old gangster movies where tommy guns ae hidden in violin cases.

I love Pull Handel. That's too bad about the Amadeus series. I was unaware of its existence, and I think I can live without it. I don't want anything to mar the movie for me.

Love,
Janie

You can find memes about anything, Debra! I love these, especially the cat at a percussion (?) instrument.

These are good! And thank you for the review of the remake of "Amadeus" - I was almost interested in watching it, but I am SO over stuff from specific genres being remade to be hip and relatable to today's audiences.

And if a composer stole some of his sisters original compositions and passed them off as his own, it is Felix Mendelssohn. https://www.mentalfloss.com/history/women-who-were-written-out-of-history-books?utm_source=firefox-newtab-en-gb

You find the best memes. Whenever "they" try to make a good movie into a series or even an updated movie it is never near as good.

I am tired of the need to remake films that are already brilliant.

The Happy Whisk said...

Haven't seen the remake, the original film impossible to top. IMO. Impossible. For me, it's like Willy Wonka. The real one, brilliant. That crap that Deep did. I can't even put into words my unhappiness. In other news, I really, really thought those birds were notes. I had to looooook loook. Love that.

Took me a while to get the first one.

I find violin very sad instrument, I love and enjoy it very much
Movie looks great in teaser but as you have watched the better version of it I think it’s totally understandable why you like it least
