Authoritarian regimes need a complicit, corrupt judicial system to consolidate their antidemocratic power. As soon as MAGA Republicans secured a deeply conservative majority on the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS), it was clear to me that the conditions for this were in place and that the effects on American law would be severe, long-lasting, and dangerous. And indeed, Chief Justice John Roberts and the SCOTUS majority have wasted no time in aiding and abetting the ever-growing subverting of the American Constitution and the Rule of Law in the United States.
As a lawyer, it sickens me to watch this debasement of justice and legal principles. It disgusts me that it is being committed by a Chief Justice and his majority bloc of the Supreme Court, all of whom swore to uphold the Constitution. Yes, the Supreme Court's minority bloc and many lower court judges across the United States are doing their best to protect and apply democratic justice and the Rule of Law, but at the end of the day, they are not more powerful than SCOTUS. As the highest court in the land, SCOTUS is the one which shapes American law.

This is the truth. The hypocrisy of this administration and the Republican party is scary and dangerous. And the will of the voters is gone. That is really sad. Politics is always tricky and can be often be full of slime but this right now it's whatever comes after slime. I'm going to stop here because I could go on and on.
I love your words and from your view as a lawyer. I agree completely. When he got back in, he said even before elected he would be hell bent on revenge. Many knew it would be worst then before, but did they listen????? Biden really should have added and stacked to the SCOTUS, but he never did. Now it will take years and years to undo all the damages. @ Pixie -- The Canadian Constitution gives the federal government the sole jurisdiction to appoint superior court judges. Alberta (like other provinces) have representation on the judicial appointment committees which vet and recommend suitable candidates for appointment by the feds. I am confident that the federal government will not alter this to allow Alberta to appoint directly. A constitutional amendment of the division of powers would require unanimous political consent of every province and the feds. Not going to happen!
@ Moving with Mitchell -- In Canada, judges must retire at age 75. SCOTUS has no term limits. It needs to have them.
All 100% correct, in my view. Add in the inappropriate use of the "Shadow Docket" and it's moving like a bullet train. Should the Dems fail to win in the '26 Midterms, and fail again in the '28 general: The Roberts Court will be marked in history as the one that oversaw the dismantling of the U.S.

The hope was that a Supreme Court would feel the weight of the finality of its decisions and behave without favor. This didn't take into consideration the fallibility of man to impose their own prejudices. The Supreme Court has historically made biased decisions throughout time, very often limiting the rights of minorities and rulings influenced by the wealthy.
This court has been disastrous for the rights of individuals.

It's absolutely sickening. This country had many structural inequities but we had made some progress in addressing them... Now it's all being rolled back, or rather, rewritten to be so much worse.

Even with and empowered and enlightened government(Obama as President but unfortunately at the end of his 2nd term when the GOP controlled the Senate)the GOP led by Mitch McConnell, denied Obama's selection of Merrick Garland to replace Antonin Scalia and held the seat vacant for 11 months, until tRUMP was elected and would select Neil Gorsuch to the vacancy. Legally unprecedented but they found a way to do it, and here we are.
The fuckery runs deep. I reckon that the rest of the world can kiss off the United states, sooner the better. U.S. has run out of ammo, common sense, heart, and power. It is but a small country, easily manipulated, just waiting for other countries to realize and get out of the sand box entirely. Canada as model. Thank you Mr. Carney!

He has secured himself a special place of being on the Wrong Side of History, I just have to Wonder either: A: What Goods did someone have on him personally to Sell himself and how much did it Cost? B: How did someone so corrupted end up so high up in the Criminal Justice System, I have to think there must have been clues along his Career Path? So many Questions, so few Answers. I'm Retired from a large DA's Office, it sickens me how all the Institutions have been compromised and criminalized by this Regime so thoroughly, so easily, and how many Americans were willing to Support that and still do, even after everything has been so clearly revealed and cannot be disputed.

McConnell should burn in hell for giving the felon 3 justices, and some or maybe most of the justices chosen by Republicans are corrupt. Clarence and Ginnie Thomas are horrible people.

Exactly, very well said. But the road to Hell isn't paved with good intentions, it's covered in greenbacks. There are billionaires behind all of this corruption and their only intent is to bleed every last dollar for the American treasury.
America is one of the youngest settled countries on Earth and like a spoiled baby refuses to learn from its elders it seems. I do understand there are thousands of decent Americans and I wish them well, but just like boiling stock, the scum needs to be scraped off the top and dumped.
