My Fearless Oscar Predictions!

I only ever watch one awards show per year -- the Academy Awards! It's a leftover tradition from my childhood, back in the days when it was literally the only awards show on TV. Plus I love movies and these golden statuettes are still the most prestigious awards for them.

My general prediction is that this is the year when the Academy is going to recognize actors and directors who, for whatever reasons, have been grossly overlooked in years past. Wrongs will be righted and some old grievances laid to rest. In that spirit and as promised, here are my fearless Oscar predictions for ten big and/or key categories!

Best Costume Design:
Ruth E. Carter for Black Panther

Best Original Song:
"Shallow" from A Star is Born. This is the only Oscar Lady Gaga will get.

Best Original Screenplay:
Adam McKay for Vice. Whether you agree with the film's political analysis or not (and I do), it was very, very cleverly written.

Best Adapted Screenplay:
Charlie Wachtel et al for BlacKkKlansman

Best Actress:
Glenn Close for The Wife. This will be her Oscar to make up for all those years of being overlooked. A "career-recognition" Oscar, if you will.

Best Actor:
Willem Dafoe for At Eternity's Gate. Ditto re the career-recognition.

Best Supporting Actress:
Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk

Best Supporting Actor:
Sam Elliott for A Star is Born. Another career-recognition Oscar.

Best Picture:
Bohemian Rhapsody. Sorry, Cal, I know you're pulling for Black Panther.

Best Director:
Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman. Again, a career-recognition Oscar for all those years of being unjustly snubbed and overlooked.

So we'll see tonight if I'm right!

I don't watch the Oscars because it seems like the kind of movies I watch never win. As a kid, it always felt like boring period pieces and not much fun at all. That can't be right, because "The Shape of Water" won last year, but that's the way it's felt.

I hope it's a fun ride for you tonight, regardless of who wins!

I think Rami will win best actor not Dafoe. But Oscars have long ago become such a sad affair that I haven't watched the crap for a decade at least. I've recently watched over at YouTube Whoopie Goldberg's opening speech when she hosted Oscars some twenty years ago with Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench, Meryl, Maggie, Ian and others in the audience... almost made me tear up in sadness... Oscars were once classy. I have a feeling they will give a lot of Oscars this year judging the colour of the skin not talent. The fact that some films are even nominated makes a mockery out of the ceremony.

I haven't watched the Oscars in years. Actually don't get to the movies much and the only movie I saw on the list was Black Panther. We had planned on seeing Bohemian Rhapsody because I love Freddie, but hubby got sick and then my back went out.

I'm rooting for Regina King. She is literally brilliant in everything she does...well, the things she did after 227?

lady gaga is crying after reading this. i loved 'bohemian rhapsody' but i really loved 'green book'. i hated 'the favorite'. it's on too late for me seeing as it will be ending not too long before i wake up. i'll be surprised tomorrow morning.

I am so behind in the movies. I have only seen Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Panther. Eventually I will get to see all these!

I shall come back to check your predictions.

I was thinking of not watching but then they are limiting everyone 90 seconds for speech time. The clock starts ticking the moment they start walking to the podium. It should be interesting how many get cut short and I also heard that the actors were told to leave their politics at home. Could be an interesting night for all.
As for who will win. I think there might be a few actors who should have gotten Oscars that didn't before because of stupid judges picking the favorite friend or going with the pack. We will see if there is a little redemption.

Well if you have a chance to go, you could always take a mumbai escort if your partner doesn't want to go! I'm working on becoming a grumpy old man... so theaters are TOO EXPENSIVE and TOO CROWDED and TOO LOUD dang nabit! I have no idea what these movies are.

You at least know these names and movies...I haven't a clue :)
No Oscars for me I'm afraid...but I hope the ones that you picked will all be winners :)

Hello Debra, It's been over a decade since I have seen a new movie, and I don't even know who most of these people are, so I'll just second all your predictions.

No host this time around should be interesting. Hopefully that means they'll cut the boring speeches as well.

Mine line up with yours pretty well. William was fabulous but I have to go with my True Soul Mate (even if he doesn't know it) Viggo, Richard E Grant for supporting.

Isle of Dogs was wonderful...I hope it wins. Roma has been talked about but I loved Shoplifters for Foreign and Bao for Animated Short.

Can't Wait!!!!

I don't have the attention span for the awards shows. I too watched it throughout my childhood. I still remember the night Star Wars lost to Annie Freakin' Hall. That was the moment I learned just how unfair and stupid Oscar can be. Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born will split the vote allowing Black Panther to take the prize it so rightfully deserves.

Best of luck. Buena fortuna.

Glenn Close is an acting wonder. A better-late-than-never Oscar should be due her.

I haven't seen all the films out of a bit of lack of interest.

Costumes for both Black Panther & The Favourite were stellar.

Roma has been sweeping a lot of the other award shows. I wonder if Cuaron will when yet again for best director?

I totally forgot it was the Oscars tonight.

So have you watched all the nominees? I'm sure that makes a big difference since for most categories it is extremely subjective and comparing movies is like comparing different types of food. Too many factors.
We have seen both "Star is Born" and "Green Book" - both great movies.

Marie Smith said...

I’m rooting for Spike too.

Bohemian Rhapsody May win. I want BlackKKKla Sean to win cause I think Green Book is way too maudlin.
Shallow may win and I hope Gaga lets them have it.
I just saw Billy Porter on the red carpet and he gave me LIFE.
XOXO

It's strange, I had a dream last night that Lady Gaga won the Oscar. I woke up drowsy and out of it, so I kind of wondered if I had dreamed it or read it on my phone somehow, until I realized the Oscars were tonight. I do think it's neat that's she been nominated for acting. Apparently everyone thinks its your pick as well, so probably not. But imagine the psychic prediction if my dream was right.

I don't watch the Oscars. I do try to watch the Red Carpet for the fashion but often I miss out on that two and catch up on all the clothes the next day.

Hi, Debra! I'm watching the Oscars right now. Terry and I got back from our Sunday Night Date Night just in time to see Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper sing "Shallow." I cheered when Gaga won for the song!!! We shall see how the rest of the night unfolds. Thanks for your fearless Oscar predictions!

My husband and I are not movie buffs...I don't think we've been to a movie all year. We had definite plans to see Bohemian Rhapsody but something came up, I don't remember what...not to mention the fact that bedtime is 9pm and the movie theatre is 35 miles away, and...
