As mentioned in Part 1 of this post, Heated Rivalry's author Rachel Reid is no stranger to the M/M fanfiction world. In fact, one of the love stories told in Heated Rivalry began its existence as an actual Steve/Bucky Hockey AU on the popular fanfiction site Archive of Our Own!
In the fic, closeted pro hockey player Steve Rogers fell hard for twink barista Bucky Barnes, much drama and angst ensued, Bucky's best female friend Natasha Romanov had to give Steve "the shovel talk," Steve smartened up, and the angst-ridden pair finally had a happy ending.
Yes, it became the SCOTT/KIP subplot in Heated Rivalry!
And the series just couldn't resist, it seems, giving a few sly nods to the characters' original identities. Check out Captain America's and Scott Hunter's running gear in these gifs from the Marvel movies and the series, respectively --
And how about when both characters make an effort to pass incognito in public?
Even Cap's star spangled blue uniform gets a coded reference in Scott's USA Olympic Hockey Team jacket --
There's no costume coding for Bucky Barnes' doppelganger (after all, it's not easy to subtly reference the Winter Soldier's silver metal arm). Instead, the coding occurs in names. Both characters have a kind of goofy little nickname somehow derived from an otherwise dignified full name -- James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes and Christopher "Kip" Grady. Oh, and take note of the good-luck smoothies' name that Kip always makes for Scott -- "Blue Moon Over Brooklyn."
Anyway, this amuses me no end and I hope you watch for the coding in Episode 3 of Heated Rivalry.
And hey, if you're still hanging in with me after THREE P0STS, thanks for reading, LOL!
[P.S. Speaking of the free-to-use Archive of Our Own, it now has a new category specifically for Heated Rivalry fanfiction, if you just can't get enough of the boys' antics. At the moment, there are nearly 9,000 fics already posted to the site. And here's the link to the list, you animals. You're welcome!]

...all of this is new to me.
Funny, they look much the same in the gif running, just like they do in life running to come to get me!!! But don't tell anyone...it's a secret triad relationship after all.
I don't know much about it, but did hear it was becoming all the rage on some 'channel' I don't subscribe too!
Interesting!
New to me, too, but kind of interesting ....
@ Mistress Maddie -- Yes, I understand why you'd love to be the meat in that sandwich!
This is new to me too. There's probably lots of stuff out there that would be new to me. :)
BTW - loving this series from you! Much appreciated! R
This is fascinating, thanks so much for pointing out and it is brilliant. I had not made the connection at all.
Holy crap! I never made any of those connections...but I'll bet my wife has and not said anything.
Art imitating Art that imitated Art. That's how the world goes around! I love that this fanfic has flourished so vibrantly
And so nice to look at.
Ooh, the undercurrent. All those subliminal messages. And I noticed how Scott’s Under Armour logo is proudly positioned left instead of center. Now we just have to get Scott into Chris Evans’ cable knit.
@ Moving with Mitchell -- Yeah, so many people fetishize that sweater from "Knives Out!"
Okay, I am so out of the loop on this!
It is a neat piece of meta-textual symmetry: Reid quietly preserved the Steve/Bucky DNA through visual cues, naming parallels
The eye candy factor sends my blood sugar through the roof. Yummy. Thank you, SWS.
@ Rawknrobyn -- You're welcome!
That's funny but I don't mind looking at either of them.
Is the sequel "Unrivaled" already in production?
@ Tundra Bunny -- I know a second season is planned but I don't think it's in actual production yet.
The side‑by‑side gifs and little costume/name callbacks are such a clever way to wink at fandom without breaking the fourth wall, and “Blue Moon Over Brooklyn” as a smoothie name absolutely killed me. Nicely done, Debra.
OMG
I love this so hard! I had no idea of this connection! I love me some Bucky/CA fanfic!
I love the series!
XOXO
This is new to me.
My heart goes pitter pat when I look at those handsome fellas in their skin tight costumes. Interesting about the parallels in costuming. Very cool post, Debra.
Love,
Janie
Oh dude! We can't trust those guys! No way.
