Free Fun to Brighten Your Day!

I'm currently listening to a delightfully funny book being read in free podcast episodes by its Welsh author, Liz Hinds, who blogs at Finding life hard?

I know that writers can sometimes be absolutely dreadful readers of their own work, but not Liz! She is a very talented reader -- her voice, intonation and appropriate British accent all help bring the book to vivid life. Each podcast episode is laugh-out-loud funny, quirky and entertaining.

The book follows the humorous misadventures of Alison Turner, a newly-divorced 50-year-old who is exploring single life again with the help of her well-meaning friends, all while dealing with her nearly-grown children, her feisty Great-aunt Millie in a local nursing home, an unpleasant client at work who always seems to catch her at her worst, plus her ex-husband and his much younger girlfriend for whom he left her.

Click here for the podcast's home page!

Every episode is approximately 15-ish minutes long, so it can be listened to in easily-managed segments. Episodes are being added every couple of days or so. The first one was posted on April 1st, so start listening at the bottom of the episode list and work your way up.

I hope you will check out this podcast and enjoy the book!

Thanks for this, Debra. I've never gotten into podcasts, but I trust your judgment. Looking forward to it.

It’s always nice when writers can read their own books well. Neil Gaiman, for example, does it beautifully.

Ohhh
I love this! Thanks for the suggestion!
I have not gotten into the Audible trend yet. Even though I commute to work (or was commuting until COVID-19 fucked everything up) I usually listened to music podcasts and the occasional funny one (like RuPaul's What's the Tea? or Dan Savage's Savage Love) but listening to a book podcast sounds intriguing.
I may try it while I do some gardening this Spring. Motivation!!

XOXO

Hello Debra, I'm not much of a listener, but I took a look at her quite pleasant blog. Mostly little snippets, with an added dose of good humor and usually an attractive photograph. It seems that in Great Britain you can point a camera at random and come up with a good shot!

I always find British accent hot, but then again I find almost any accent hot.

May the Goddess bestow great wealth and all that fun stuff that we really want for sharing this with us. Personally I want wealth and health but I'll take a great laugh any day. Thanks hon.

I don't think I could do that. When I watch the news I need to be looking at someone talking or have the video that they are talking about. If I'm watching the news and lay back and close my eyes thinking, 'I'll just listen', my mind goes off on other things.

I haven't gotten into podcasts much - more of a book reader, tbh. But, a couple of my fiends have been listening to all sorts of good stuff. They are very opinionated about the voice of the reader! I'm going to give this a try; goodness knows we need some levity! Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks for the tip, Debra! Beyond listening to Moth Radio Hour (when I can catch it) and This American Life, I have not been inspired to seek out new stuff to digest. This is a nice nudge. :)

Super - thanks for the recommendation. That sounds like my life if his Lordship ditched me for a much younger woman.

Podcasts are something I have heard of. My daughter listens to them in her car.

Perhaps it is time to turn it on.

Great idea for a share. I'm going to listen.

I see you've read me read, huh? I am certainly one of the writers who is terrible at reading her own work. I shall check out the podcast (in hopes of getting some laughs... and a few pointers).

Thanks for the recommendation, Debra. I'd definitely enjoy the book more than the podcast. I don't listen well, but I love curling up with a good book. I have a friend who listens to podcasts and audio books while she mucks her horse stalls. She has four horses, so she hears a lot. You can tell HRH that I'd far rather have a cat with a litter box than four horses with stalls. Take care!

I'm also listening to the same podcast. And really enjoying it.
