Time To Go A-Viking!

Norse News: Date for Norse activity in North America confirmed as 1021 CE!

After analyzing 14C concentrations in tree rings from wooden objects found at L'Anse aux Meadows, researchers have been able to conclude that the Norse were active in North America exactly 1000 years ago, in 1021 CE.

I've never been to
L'Anse aux Meadows
in Newfoundland,
but one of my travel goals
is to get there someday!

In the meantime, let's
celebrate our favourite
historical pagan ruffians!

And now, to conclude,
a public service announcement
from the Danish Road Safety Council --

Since my Blog is called Bohemian Valhalla I found this all absolutely hilarious! So far no willing Sacrifice has been sent thru my Doors, perhaps word got out in da Hood? I like the idea of a Vikings Funeral in some rich Guy's Yacht, perhaps Jeff Bezos Yacht would be a nice touch.

Hahahah
It ruins my braids! LOL
And I did read about the Vikings getting to America way, way before Christopher did. And they didn't even get their own Vikings' Day, huh?

XOXO

Hello Debra, I noticed that those super-scientific date calculations were still based on a great deal of supposition. People who search intensely enough for proof of something tend to find it. To change the subject, do you remember the "Viking" based cartoon Hagar the Horrible?

Okay, "throwing a juice box at the hospice nurse" wins the day!

They might be able to pass as Vikings - depends on how much mead is consumed inside the gate!

@ Parnassus (Jim) -- Yes, I loved "Hagar the Horrible" back in the day! With his gentle poet son who was such a "non" Viking type, LOL!

Very Funny! For those who are impatient, the best part of the YouTube video is right at the end.

These are so damn funny especially the video. Loved the ending.

The safety clip is hysterical! My husband and I love The Last Kingdom. Lots of Viking fun with that series!

Yep - no one should ride a horse without a helmet on. Among all sports, equestrians have the most head injuries. Except when taking goofy Halloween wizard pictures, I never ride Liathach the wonder horse without a helmet. Can't replace my brain. Great commercial with a great message. The other memes are funny too.

Great post today! Lots of LOLs, especially the origin of English, the juice box, and the helmet PSA!

I love Vikings. The commercial was great.

Two of my granddaughters attended school in Norway, and they informed me that Vikings did not wear horns on their headgear. Many Viking-era artefacts have been unearthed in Norway but a Viking-era helmet embellished with horns has never ever been found.

Lots of good ones. But what rang true for me was at the very end of the video when Svend hits his head on the cross beam. When I had to wear a hard hat for work I would bang into things all the time.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Rosemary -- Very true! But alas, old stereotypes die hard, don't they.

Debra, nice video :-)
With analogies to anti-vaxxers of course ;-)

Very funny. Will watch the video as soon as I can. On a side note 'tis the season to go Viking. Soon it will be anyway.

I am having a problem with all these vikings. I mean, they are fine to trade with and exchange gifts. But if they want to bring that whole bloodthirsty religion over here, no way.

I don't think they are so great. I don't trust Vikings, especially in this incarnation.

BRB, I've got to get my juice box chucking arm trained

You are so cleaver, I love this post and of course the knitted beards.

Ha! I too went to North America, stayed a bit, went home again. Apparently repeated a pattern. (Truly exciting news, and a great article in Nature; thanks Deb)

Love these memes! Love the amazing knitted cap, braids and beard for human and cat! Good Kitty! Love the description of English. And love that idiot who will only wear his helmet when his wife insists. Lol. Cheers!

The Board of Directors Here at Spo-reflections approves of all these, including the helmet.

This is hilarious, Debra! Thanks for the info about L'Anse aux Meadows. I hadn't stumbled across that yet. I visited L'Anse aux Meadows ten years ago. It was fascinating. The Vikings were producing bog iron there! I really had the feeling that I was transported back 1000 years. I hope you get there soon!

Well I've been saying this for years! Super duper post!

i am still laughing dear Debra oh my God you are so bad to make me laugh when i did not want to oh dear these were all dynamic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't love Vikings. They burned our village. They are proto-nazis. They are liars. They are thugs and murderers.
They are darling baby for white people who are tired of being Christians.
But they don't want to do anything about it, they just want to be Vikings.
When you are a Viking, you don't have to think about things. No way.

As a Viking, it is a free license to be an idiot.

Never ask a Viking about anything.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Richard -- Yes, everything you say about Vikings is true. They were bloodthirsty murderers and thieves. In other words, typical humans. That's why I find them so interesting. We think we are different than Vikings in our "kinder, gentler" world and have come a long way. We have not.
