It's Australia Day Down Under

I've never been to Australia,
but I'd love to go some day!

Greetings from Canada!
Enjoy your National Day today,
our Commonwealth Cousins!

Hi Debra, These are all great, but the fish one reminded me of this old favorite from Ogden Nash--sorry if it's a bit long for the comments section. --Jim
========================================================
Ogden Nash: "The Snark was a Boojum was a Prawn"

A giant new prawn has been dredged up near Santiago, Chile.... it is succulent and mysterious.... The new prawn has not been named, a fact that is causing no concern in Chile. -- Times

Could some descending escalator
Deposit me below the equator,
I'd hunt me a quiet Chilean haunt,
Some Santiago restaurant;
The fact I speak no Espanol
Would handicap me not at all,
Since any language would be aimless
In ordering a tidbit nameless;
I'd simply tie my napkin on
And gesture like a giant prawn,
Then, served the dish for which I yearned,
Proceed to munch it, unconcerned.
Happy crustacean, anonymous prawn,
From distant Latin waters drawn,
Hadst thou in Yankee seas appeared,
Account executives would have cheered,
Vice-presidents in paroxysms
Accorded thee multiple baptisms;
Yea, shouldst thou hit our markets now,
Soon, prawn, wouldst thou be named -- and how!
I see the bright ideas drawn:
Prawno, Prawnex, and Vitaprawn;
And, should upper-bracket dreamers wake,
Squab o'Neptune, and Plankton Steak.
Small wonder thou headest for Santiago,
Where gourmets ignore such frantic farrago;
That's exactly where I myself would have went if I'd
Been mysterious, succulent, unidentified.

@ Parnassus (Jim) -- Oh, that's perfect, LOL! I've never read it before, but it is exactly on point!

Great cartoons. But Australia day celebrates when colonials seized a sovereign territory from the aboriginal people and proceeded to oppress them. To this day. Sorry to be a downer, can't celebrate that.

I'd really love to visit Australia and spend a month or two just looking around. It probably wouldn't happen but I can wish.
I'll need to get me some Nescafe!
Thanks for the smiles this morning.

A very clever and funny collection. You did a great job putting them together Debra.

Once, I was introduced by a friend to a guy from Austria. Only he was from Australia! She said his English was so good he almost sounded like he was from England.

I have a t-shirt that reads, "There are no kangaroos in Austria." People will try to argue that that is where kangaroos come from. We spent a couple of days in Salzburg back in 2025.

The Australia in a week one reminded me of a friend who says, "I've been here, here, there, wherever," and you find out it was for two hours when on a cruise.
Love the nescafe one.

😠😂 "Boo meringue!" Consider yourself slapped!
ðŸĨ° Loved the Austria/Australia meme. In my neck-o'-the-woods, we get a kick out of people asking if they need a passport to enter New Mexico!! ðŸĪŠ

Happy Australia Day. That tourist map scared me off from ever visiting.

Best but obscure Australian movie: “Welcome to Woop Woop” with Jonathan Schaech and Rod Taylor. https://www.google.com/gasearch?q=welcome%20to%20woop%20woop&source=sh/x/gs/m2/5#ebo=0

That one hurt.

@ Frank -- I must confess, I've never heard of that one! I've seen lots of other good Australian movies though.

Any country that has cassowaries and 7 foot tall male kangaroos wandering through homes and neighbourhoods deserves a celebratory day! Have a g'day, eh?

Those are great! But don't broadcast this too much. Our dictator might want this country next.

That third image is a reminder that Australia is not just a country but a whole continent.
