Marvel Universe of Superheroes Exhibit, Part 1

Earlier this month, My Rare One and I went to see the Marvel Universe of Superheroes exhibit currently running here in Edmonton. The exhibit marks the 80th anniversary of Marvel Comics and the 10th anniversary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It includes original comics, original art, movie costumes, props and memorabilia.

Thor flies on guard high above the admission desk so there's no danger of anyone trying to sneak in without paying.

Inside the exhibit hall are a number of "selfie station photo op" statues of such popular characters as Black Panther, Hulk and Spider-Man.

But what I was there to see were the movie costumes and props! They are not easy to photograph in the dimly-lit exhibit hall since they are behind glass that catches a lot of reflections, but here's some of my favourites --

Doctor Strange's iconic costume is displayed in a multi-mirrored case that shows it off from several directions. I especially liked seeing the back of his red Cloak of Levitation.

And here are the costumes of my favourite female superheroes! The Black Widow's uniform chosen for this display is not, alas, her black leather catsuit but one that looks like it is made out of stretchy athletic fabricwear.

The fierce warrior garb of General Okoye of Wakanda did not disappoint, however. (This photo's for you, Cal!)

And here's Gamora's costume from Guardians of the Galaxy (also Star Lord's).

The exhibit features brief glimpses and memorabilia of many, many comic book characters beyond the Avengers, including X-Men, the Inhumans and more.

But I am posting here only about my MCU faves. Accordingly, Part 2 of this post will feature the costumes and props relating to Thor, Loki, Captain America and the Winter Soldier. Squeeeeee!

I want at least one life-size figure for our terrace. I would enjoy this, although I’m only familiar with a very limited number of characters from the Marvel Universe.

Certainly a wonderful place for any Marvel fan.

Very cool. I would have loved to see this myself.

Oh, wow, for a moment I thought that wasn't Thor's knee but something else... such a sad disillusionment ....

Hello Debra, Sounds like a fun exhibit. Did you know that Superman, perhaps the first of the modern iconic superheroes, originated in Cleveland?

Looks great... thanks for sharing, dear Lady Debra

It looks like a cool exhibit. I would have someone take my picture while my head is fit into Hulk's hand. That would have been cool. I always had one question. How did Hulk always have his purple pants on when his suit was either black or dark brown before he got mad and changed? Just wondering.

As a lifelong fan of comics in all its permutations, I'd love to see that exhibit, especially if there was original artwork.

Superhero heaven by the sound of it! Great photos!

What a great exhibit! I love the superheroes! I will say that it took a while for me to realize I was looking at Thor's knee in the second pic... :)

There's a lot of hotness in this post.
Nice way to start my week. Thank you, Debra.

How do they all manage to be in the same exhibition without fighting each other?

I thought the same thing as Dezmond!!! Sounds like a good time for you!

What a fun exhibit! I have a friend who does a lot of cos-play and she would LOVE getting a close up view of the costumes.

No selfies?

the new Captain Marvel movie desecrates the comic. The original Captain Marvel was like Superman but blond, and he didn't have to change his clothes, he just had to yell Shazam and lightning would come down from the sky and he was transformed. He had two super kids: Mary Marvel and Freddy Marvel and they transformed into super heroes by yelling 'Captain Marvel.'

At least that's the way I remember them.

Somehow Captain Marvel never caught on like Superman.

@ DEZMOND, Susan and bobbie -- Well, you've all got a great eye for "detail," I must say. Little innocent me never noticed a thing. That's what I get for being a lesbian!

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Parnassus (Jim) -- Yay Cleveland! And one of Superman's creators, Joe Shuster (the artist), was Canadian before moving to the USA with his parents.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Leanna -- The Hulk's pants are one of the mysteries of the universe.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ e -- No, I didn't take any selfies. But I did take a couple of photos of My Rare One hamming it up with the Hulk and Spider-Man. She wanted to send them to her little great-nephew who loves superheroes.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Ol'Buzzard -- Yes, the movies in the MCU often differ from the storylines in the classic comics they're based on. For the most part, I think they improved on the originals. Or at least updated them to the 21st century.

Oh yes, these are awesome. Designers did fine wok on these.

Nicely done, Debra! It's so hard to get exhibit photos. I wish the exhibit would come here. I'm looking forward to Part 2.

My daughter is about all things Marvel. I haven't really kept up but I love all things new and different.

Somewhere along the line, I missed the comic book excitement phase in my life. I know I had comics, but I just don't remember much about them. So I'm donating all my hidden comic excitement to you so you can have twice as much fun.

I like Dr. Strange's costume the best - I might actually think about wearing that one IRL! ;)

I'm jealous! I wanna go! Nothing like that comes to the good old Redneck Riviera. We really need Super Anything here. Super Mildred, perhaps?

Mildred Ratched said...

I don't see the Super Mildred who has the power of sedation in her stare. Wow! Who wouldn't want to be a Superhero? Okay maybe not now that I'm old. Hey, my cane could be a prop with some super power to whack people. Now, I'm leaving. I'm totally depressed because I can't be a superhero. Bummer! :(
