Coloured Pencils Art

I haven't been able to take a coloured pencils art class since before the pandemic, and I missed this medium since it's one of my faves! But, finally, I had another chance in November-December to take a six-week course. The class and instructor (Susan Casault) were great -- I learned some valuable techniques and info previously unknown to me!

Here's what we did in the course. All pieces are based on a photo reference and done on black paper (Stonehenge or Canson) using Prismacolour Premier pencils. I'm happy with how they all turned out, although of course I also see all the "areas for improvement." Next time, next time, LOL!

Oh that koala is going to earn you some likes. The pumpkin is luminous, though.

Colored pencils were (are?) my favorite genera when drawing. I have several sets.Alas Babylon! I haven't used them in ages.

Very nice talents!!! Debs, they are all so good. Like them against the black paper. I couldn't pick a favorite, but if I had to choose I'd gladly hang the owl picture!!! And they'd all make great greeting cards. Maybe you should start up a She Who Seeks line of cards?!?!?

And I have used Prismacolour Premier pencils before when doing interior renderings when I was in design school, they are excellent.

Those are very nice. I like the way drawing on black paper really makes them shine.

You do such beautiful work in any medium you try. You inspire me every time. I wish your posts would inspire me enough to get off my ass and create again.

These look good to me. The last one is so adorable.

Have a lovely day.

Your 'no so good' work is my 'totally out of reach' work. Now if you want a painting of triangles, squares, and other geometric shapes, I'm your guy.

They look amazing. Well done you.
I especially love the fact they’re on black backgrounds. It’s makes the colours just pop

Black paper - I would have never thought of that. I would guess it would be harder to make the color show. Hey, my first thought on the candle was hot seat. The koala and owl are great. Such good detail.

@ bobbie -- Which one is my fave? Probably the koala, although quite frankly, I like them all!

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Moving With Mitchell -- It's going to the classes that keeps me motivated. Without classes, I'm a total slug and hardly ever do any art at all on my own.

Busy Bee Suz said...

Deb, your talents are immeasurable. I love all the pieces you did, but I'm most happy you could attend classes again as I know this brings you joy.

Leanna said...

These are really very good. But that Koala is wonderful how you got the fur.

They all look very nice, especially the owl.

Debra: Thank you so much for sharing your art. You really have a great knack for infusing life into your pieces.

Bea said...

Hopefully, this isn't a duplicate comment as I think that the last attempted 'crashed'.
In a nutshell: You've such a facility with those colored pencils. Your pieces have a very life-like quality.

Well, if you are having trouble staying motivated to make art between classes, then how about taking some commissions? I'm sure your adoring readership would love to have a Debra original. Alternatively you could hold a contest or auction, and then donate the proceeds to a worthy cause like the UCP.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Old Lurker -- Hahahahahahaha, you had me right up until you brought in the UCP!

Kirk said...

I am impressed!!!!!!!

Old Lurker said...

Except for the UCP bit, I was being serious. Your adoring readership would probably have some interesting things for you to draw.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Old Lurker -- It is a nice thought and thank you for thinking of it. However, even a commission doesn't spur me to action, alas. I did once offer to do a special coloured pencils piece on a certain subject for a blogging buddy and it took me two years to produce it (*blush*). I felt bad about it but I learned my limitations.

The Blog Fodder said...

Awesome artwork. Love the black paper as background. The candle is my favourite

Your talent speaks for itself. Amazing! These are all lovely and vibrant and life-like. I know the feeling of forced motivation. It's why I do the writing challenge every year. I'm glad that you have classes to spur you on. I hope that drawing brings you enormous satisfaction (despite issues that only you can see).
Thanks for showing us your work!
