Friday Face OFF -- Bighorn Sheep

For this week's Friday Face OFF link party
of art featuring faces, hosted by Nicole of

Here's a Bighorn Sheep
which I did in pen and ink
with an ink wash background.

Unlike most of the exotic animals
we draw in art class, I have actually seen
many bighorn sheep in the wild
at Jasper National Park here in Alberta.

They are impressive and can be aggressive,
so caution must always be exercised around them.

Hello Debra, You have drawn a noble specimen of bighorn sheep. I was just reading that one of the major decimators of these animals is pneumonia caught from domestic sheep, who are often just carriers of the disease and stay healthy themselves.

Whoa.
That's very beautiful and it looks like it's very difficult to draw. Pen and ink drawings always have some kind of gravitas that watercolours do not have. At least in my book...

XOXO

I never thought I'd say this, but that's a lovely big horned sheep.

From the broken tip of his horn he looks like he has been through a few things.

Beautiful rendering of a majestic native species. I've seen them in the wild as well, here in Oregon. They are not to be trifled with!

Wow! Your sheep is wonderful, Debra! It looks so real. I've seen bighorn sheep here in Colorado as well. Once, when Terry and I were driving to Black Hawk for the weekend, I was whining about never seeing any bighorns at a viewing spot. I happened to look down beside our car, and there was a ram by my door. I could have stroked its horns ~ lol. The ram was unperturbed by the line of stop and go traffic on the way to Black Hawk. Amazing. Keep drawing, my friend! You're developing your talents beautifully!

Ooh, this portrait is a good likeness. They do look like that. But we hardly ever see them, and when we do, It is usually 2 or 3 ewes and some 1 or 2 lambs. Maybe if I am lucky, I see them sometimes.

That pneumonia that they are susceptible to also came here. About 5 years ago we had a meeting about this. It was a crisis, because they were doing so well, and it is an important animal.

Trying to get information from NPS wildlife biologists is like cracking geodes all day and coming up with one tiny crystal. We did learn that the heard was about 600+, that they survey them in the Fall from helicopter, some of them are collared. Last I heard, they mostly survived. I saw 3 of them, this last February 2023.

This looks like a challenging drawing, and you did a great job on it.
They must be aggressive because they're cranky about carrying around those heavy ass horns!
