A Fierce Warrior, The Grey Cup, Rockabilly, and Non-Stop Foul Language

Went with friends to see an excellent new play by a local Edmonton playwright about the top Allied sniper in World War I, a First Nations man from Ontario named Francis Pegahmagabow. He came home after the war to fight another ongoing battle for indigenous rights in Canada. In those days, native people were confined to reservations, were not legally citizens, could not vote, had their lives controlled by paternalistic white bureaucrats, and their children forcibly removed to residential schools.

As a good Canadian, I watched the Grey Cup championship CFL game on TV. Alas, the heavily favoured Winnipeg Blue Bombers got their asses handed to them on a plate 41-24 by the underdog Toronto Argonauts.

Been enjoying Dwight Yoakam's new album of original songs, full of twang, drawl, heartache and sass. He may have scraggly grey hair now but his voice, sound and style are as accomplished as ever, if you like classic rockabilly country, which I do.

And at long last, Deadpool & Wolverine is streaming on Disney+ and I can report that it is THE. BEST. DEADPOOL. MOVIE. EVER! My favourite bit is the after-credits scene, a virtuoso rendition of non-stop foul language and vulgarity (*chef's kiss*). I won't ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet by revealing who gives that Oscar-worthy performance, lol, but there seriously needs to be a statuette in his future. He was apparently very enthusiastic about committing the monologue to memory rather than just relying on cue cards as suggested.

P.S. I've just discovered that, OH, OF COURSE, that scene is posted on YouTube anyway, so if you really do want to watch it, simply click here.

I am so many movies behind.

I was expecting it to be Ryan Reynolds, and then thought, maybe Jackman. Took me by surprise.
Loved it!

The way we, both Canada and the US, treated indigenous peoples disgusts me.

Of course I clicked. I love a good stream of profanity. That play sounds great.

I can't wait to watch it. It is shameful how indigenous people were/are treated. We broke families apart and are shocked at the generational trauma. WTF!

I'm disgusted by the amount of awful "history" that we were never taught about when I was in school. So many hidden atrocities that weren't ever mentioned in our old history books. It's terrible what was done.

🤬 It seems like every country settled by British/European whites was vying for the title of "Most Cruel to the Humans We Found In OUR Country (How Dare They Exist)!!" 20 years ago, I was completely traumatized by the movie "Rabbit-proof Fence," about the Australian government's "protective" behavior toward Aboriginal children! Just thinking about it today makes me shaky and tearful. It is amazing that the world's most "civilized" nations are also capable of being the most savage and merciless!! 🤬

I didn't know about Francis Pegahmagabow but the same sort of thing happened south of your border. Navajo Code Talkers spring to mind. Immigrants and settlers have a huge karmic debt. I'm glad more of the atrocities are coming to light and being acknowledged.

Sorry about the Prairie team losing to the city boys...

I can't think of Dwight Yoakum without hearing that Mary Chapin Carpenter song in my head... 'I feel lucky'. Lol

Maybe I need to catch up on this Wolverine and Deadpool thing... they seem amusing!

Just discovered your blog.
Hello ! :)
So you think the Deadpool & Wolverine movie is worth it. I found myself fed up of superhero stuff, but might give it a go.

@ Liam Ryan -- Hi and welcome to my blog! I'm a huge fan of all the Marvel superhero movies and have seen them all, many more than once, and all the series on Disney+. To me, they embody modern mythology and are endlessly fascinating from that point of view. But Deadpool is fun just for being a satire of the whole genre. A delightfully foul-mouthed, vulgar satire, love it!

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Tundra Bunny -- A foot long, I assume?

Contrary to your vulgar imagination, I am neither greedy nor a nympho... 8" will suffice, LOL!

Pegahmagabow !!! He must have had some kind of psychological trauma throughout his life due to that name..Nobody ever got it right , I assume..
I haven't been to the movies for years..way behind!!
I don't know if you celebrate Thanksgiving ..Probably not but just in case..Enjoy!!

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ This N That -- Yes, in the Army, his nickname was "Peggy" because no one could pronounce his surname. And we DO celebrate Thanksgiving in Canada, but in October so we've had our turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie about 6 weeks ago, but thanks for your well wishes!

I got a kick out of that latest Deadpool as well. That play sounds interesting. Speaking of plays, we enjoyed the satirical farce The Book of Mormon at the Jubilee on the weekend. Have you seen it? If not, I bet you'd love it.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ DB Stewart -- Alas, I have not seen The Book of Mormon, but I think you're right that I would enjoy it! I hope there's a good movie made of it some day.

OMG that scene!
I watched a PBS show on horses with indigenous people and it stunned me. The treatment by custer who killed thousands of horses just to keep them from his "enemy" the native americans.

My Lolo is obsessed with Deadpool. I watched the first one, and I was just kind of 'meh' about it. I will check out the link though and send it her way.
Crazy what the indigenous people of the world have gone through; I hope the play was done well.
I LOVE DWIGH YOAKAM!! I must look into this album.
