Strategic Voting For The Win!

Because of American threats against Canadian economic and political sovereignty, the Liberal Party won in yesterday's federal election. As of this moment it is still unclear whether it will be a majority or a minority government, as some close ridings are still in play. The Liberals were able to win because the Bloc Québécois vote in Quebec and the progressive NDP vote across Canada went over in droves to the Liberals due to strategic voting.

I'm relieved that Prime Minister Mark Carney will be the one to deal with the difficult times ahead. He has an impeccable resume of calm and competent crisis management, having been Governor of the Bank of Canada during a previous recession and Governor of the Bank of England during Brexit. He has first class international contacts, connections and respect. He is not hindered by extremist ideology.

In any other set of circumstances but the current one of American aggression, Pierre Poilievre's Conservative Party would have won. They may well eventually win an election which, in my opinion, would not be good news for Canada. The party is too dominated by "Maple MAGAs" enamoured of extremist right-wing views and policies. I predict an imminent internal power struggle within its ranks now that Poilievre has lost. The ugly cracks were already showing during the campaign. Before the next election, I'm also counting on everyday Canadian voters learning a valuable lesson from watching the ongoing MAGA destruction of the political, economic, and social fabric of the United States, with its inevitable catastrophic consequences.

In the meantime, Canadians and its new government need to get on with the crisis at hand.

Although I have no say in the matter, I consider Mark Carney a very good safe pair of hands to deal with whatever lies ahead for Canada.

@ Rosemary -- Thanks for your vote of confidence from England and your experience of Carney's leadership!

You would not believe that it's the first time in my life that I've followed voting in Canada as closely as I follow voting in the US.
It was nerve wrecking. The Cheeto-lite candidate was poised to win, no? And then Mango Mussolini said he was gonna annex Canada and voilà, Carney got it.
And the idea of Maple MAGAts is really NOT comforting...
Good that right now you'll be ok. Hopefully the MMAGAts will implode.

XOXO

@ Sixpence Notthewiser -- Yes, before Trump's tariffs and annexation threats, while Trudeau was still PM, Poilievre and the Conservatives had a 25 point lead in the polls. It evaporated overnight, but Poilievre still had a lot of votes. Just not enough to win, thank goodness.

I'm relieved for you.

🍁Congratulations🍁
I am so glad y'all are still sane north of us. MAGAts are what will bring down a government faster than a bomb.

Good on Canada for having voters with a conscience and balls.

I tried. The take-away from my riding is that it wasn't a Con steam roller like last election. If NDP supporters would have been strategic it would have been a fantastic overturn to a Liberal seat. Carney is in which is what the country needs! AND Polievre lost his seat! But buddy doesn't take hints so I don't know if he will go away or not? Hopefully he will take his huge retirement and leave.

Codex: Carney is very capable. Doesn't engage in gossip knows world markets and doesn't engage in BS.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ B-Kat -- I agree that Poilievre will not go quietly. But the Conservatives are very skilled at knifing their own in the back, so we'll see if it's their mood to do that now!

And when the United States thank you and salute you for remaining the smart, intelligent Democratic country. May the imbeciles in this country take note. I'm so happy with your results! 🍁

This is the first time I've seen the term, "Maple Maga's."

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Mary Kirkland -- Yes, alas, Canada has its own fair share of racists, haters and crackpots.

I think you have to give credit to 47 for his crazy tweets that encouraged so many Canadians to vote liberal. He is such a clueless twat. Sane Americans are all thrilled at the outcome of your election. Elbows up - resist tyranny!

How do I and most Canadians spell relief? C-A-R-N-E-Y! Suck on that, Maple MAGAs!!

Maple MAGA's...

I am so glad the Labour party is maintaining power. I suspect Canada will see a lot more of our tourist dollars in the coming year.

Hello Debra, Finally, some good political news, and it seems fitting that it comes from Canada. You can't imagine how dismayed decent Americans are at the current turn of events.

🇨🇦🇨🇦👏🤘 Satirist Andy Borowitz was great on the election:
OTTAWA (The Borowitz Report)—In an emotional victory speech late Monday night, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney thanked Donald J. Trump for his stunning election win.
“I don’t deserve credit for this victory,” Carney, choking back tears, told his supporters. “Donald, I couldn’t have done it without you.
Carney received congratulatory calls from dozens of other world leaders whose political careers have been boosted by Trump, including Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“It’s like I told you, man,” Zelenskyy reportedly told the Canadian. “Trump is magic.” 🤣🤣

There are those of us down here in Felonland who are relieved that Carney won and are still watching the rest of the vote closely. As for future elections: Elbows UP!

My friend, I hopped over here to find out if you posted about this. Naturally, you're on it. I'm curious as to why all the hysteria (or perhaps it's just the American media being dramatic) from Alberta and Ottawa specifically. Hm. Seems your country would be with you in happiness about this. But you've a big country that's just as diverse as ours. Thankfully, your leadership is, for the most part, much more sound. Fingers crossed.
Keep them elbows up.
Much love.

The election result sounds like a win for sanity.

Boud said...

Great! Go Canada! So glad about the timing. Recently poilievre looked like a certainty. Now, gone! I think.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Rawknrobyn -- A succession of Conservative provincial governments in Alberta have stayed in power for decades, literally decades, by convincing voters that Ottawa is the Big Bad Enemy and only the Alberta Conservatives can protect the province's oil resources and wealth from them. It's all bullshit and political theatre, but Albertans just eat it up with a spoon. That's why Alberta is the home of Western Separatism too.

Codex: Although not perfect, Quebec voters really surprised me.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Codex -- Quebec voters are no fools. They know that if the USA takes over Canada, their language and culture would disappear in the "American melting pot" like Cajun language and culture did. Canada and Quebec are in an uneasy marriage, but Canada works to protect and preserve Quebec's distinct society.

Anonymous said...

Codex: The US can't take over unless it invades, but why the constant separatist movement?

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Anonymous (Codex) -- Quebec will do anything to maintain and preserve its French language and culture, including separation from Canada if necessary. So far it has not been necessary because English Canada has learned to respect and preserve the French language and culture too. Both Canada and Quebec do not trust the USA not to invade. We understand we could be Ukraine and Trump could be Putin. The man is dangerous.

Marie Smith said...

I’m with you on Poilievre. Glad he didn’t win, not even his own seat!

Codex: Not literally. Ukraine/Crimea were a part of Russia until 1991. Canada was never American. But I know what you mean.
Yes. Very. Military parade in May.
Congrats for now.

I think the election results were stunning...the Liberal win and the loss of seats by all the other political party leaders.

Tragically, there are MAGAs everywhere. May enlightenment, intelligence, and decency rule!

I believe it because if you’re watching the latest handmaids tale season, there are more and more Gilead supporters among Canadians (in the show).

Wow. I had no idea. My goodness. That's a shame. Thank you for explaining, Debra.
