WTF Happened to Candy Canes?

When I was a kid way back in the mid-20th century,
candy canes only had RED stripes and
ONE flavour -- PEPPERMINT.

Then, yeah okay, things got a little WACKIER and FANCIER
with the introduction of red AND GREEN stripes.
But there was still only ONE flavour -- PEPPERMINT.

Now in the 21st century, however,
the whole candy cane world
HAS GONE EFFIN' CRAZY!

Who the hell would want to eat any
of THESE flavoured candy canes?

Actually, My Rare One would probably enjoy
these next ones -- she LOVES Cinnabon!

So WHICH ONES, if any, would YOU eat?

Are there OTHER flavours you'd like to see on the market?

Hello Debra, Considering that the main ingredient is still sugar, I am sure most of these "savory" flavors are sold for the novelty value only.

I would certainly eat the hot cinnamon ones, but there always have been hot cinnamon candies.

grape, lime, orange, lemon, chocolate I've seen down here. it's peppermint ONLY for me. and I don't mind the red/green/white striped ones. you can keep all those other shitty flavours!

Oh, I loved that you thought to post about this!! So, I have traditionally given the kids in my class candy canes, sometimes tied up with a Christmas pencil, just as a little something before Christmas holidays. In the past few years, it has been harder and harder to just buy regular peppermint candy canes (they also have to be nut free for my purposes). There are blueberry, cherry, etc. I have to admit, I have not seen those crazy gravy flavoured ones!! Can you imagine what the kids would say about those? -Jenn

Oh, blech, blech, blech!!! Never heard of these and would probably buy them all... just because.

Don't f%k with the cane!!!!!!!!

I actually wouldn't eat any. But I do like having some around the house as decorations.

I must say I haven't noticed most of the ones you've shared here. Some very unique flavours!

Most of those are so very wrong, they should be illegal. :0
Honestly, I don't even eat the peppermint ones because it's so much sugar at once and it makes my poor teeth ache.
I watched one of those sappy Hallmark movies a while ago where the chic was running a candy cane factory and it was deemed "The best Candy Cane factory in the world." LOL

DEZMOND said...

Blueberry and cinnabon for me, please! We've never actually had mint aroma here, ours are always just sugary, no flavour in it and they only sell them at street fairs.

I can’t see past the red and white.

OH ICK! Someone at the candy company has too much time on their hands! Gravy?? Mac and Cheese?? PICKLE?? Wrong, wrong, wrong. Only ones on my tree have red and white stripes and taste like peppermint!

Tasker Dunham said...

Do you remember the sweet cigarettes - little thin white sticks with red on the end? They wouldn't dare sell them now.

Susan said...

Gravy candy canes??? WTF!?! Pure sacrilege! The world is losing its collective mind.

Peppermint. Sorry but I'm just not that adventurous when it comes to candy or desserts, even if I happen to like a non-candy flavor. For instance, I like pretzels, and I like chocolate, but chocolate-covered pretzels just confound my tongue, and I'm sure these candy canes would, too.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Tasker Dunham -- Yes, I DO remember candy cigarettes! And they DO still sell them (at least here in Canada) but now are called something innocuous like "candy sticks." I was shocked that they were still on the market, quite frankly.

That's all just ewwwww. The commercialization of Christmas has made a big mess of it. I would go for the hot cinnamon candy canes but the rest can just end up in the trash.

Lady M said...

Uggh - I might eat the cinnamon. That's it. The rest sound revolting.

the blueberry are good...

I would liked to at least try the Mac & Cheese and the Bacon ones...

rotisserie chicken. jesus f'ing christ. it's the republicans behind this, i just know it. they will do every outrageous thing they can to drive us crazy...hehehe!

DVArtist said...

OMG! Anything to try to make a buck, but I don't see it. Mac n Cheese, Pickle, and some of the others it is just not right.

Susan Kane said...

I would NOT ever eat bacon or wasabi or rotisserie chicken.

Oreo, oh you bet.

To be brutally honest, candy cane is the one thing I don't miss about the Christmas of yesteryear: when I grew up, I grew out of them. And I am a terrible nostalgic. I used to like them as a kid. Now from memory I think it tastes a tad too much like throat lozenges. Don't know why, I am just not a fan anymore. But then again I don't like hard candies. If I had to choose one nowadays, I'd still go for the traditional flavour of peppermint, because this is the traditional flavour. That said, I will always prefer home-made doughnuts, yule logs, Nanaimo bars, heck, even fruit cakes and Christmas puddings. Christmas is not short of sweet things to eat.

I'm not a fan.

Willym said...

No! Just no! Dear lord please make them go away!!!!!

Candy canes are supposed to be peppermint! Sriracha? Are you kidding me!

Sixpence Notthewiser said...

Just peppermint, thank you.
Anything else is just a no. Yeah. So sue me.

Chicken, bacon, wasabi and gravy flavoured candy canes -- what the hell is wrong with people? Why not just go all the way and sell kale or broccoli flavoured ones? Help us, Chesus!

What really pisses me off is that I can't find traditional hard Christmas candy anymore: no ribbons, mint pillows, humbugs or round white ones with the little green Xmas trees in the middle. I'm relieved to still find red & white peppermint candy canes on store shelves!

Joanne Noragon said...

It was worth a scroll through, to ascertain peppermint it is.

Bea said...

I will never put a savory candy cane in my mouth. NO.

Rawknrobyn.blogspot.com said...

Whoa - mac and cheese, eww! Pickle? Eww. Wasabi? I'd need a whole pack of peppermint candy canes to wash that taste out of my mouth.

Barbara said...

I would TRY the Hot Cinnamon but its Peppermint for me. At one of my offices they had the small sticks in the kitchen and I would take one and stir in my coffee. Now that was good.

peppylady (Dora) said...

Now I wonder if they have a varity pack.
Coffee is on

I don't particularly like candy canes, and I no longer eat hard candy (yay dentist bills) but I would be amenable to trying the mac and cheese, sriracha, or possibly the gravy flavor if it was not made with actual cows.

There are many other candy cane flavors to consider, all associated with Christmas: cortisol, Ritalin, panicky sweat, rage, disappointment.

Rosemary said...

I saw some regular red and white ones yesterday, and have never seen any other kind here, but they are not something that I would eat. Too sweet, too much sugar, and they would probably damage my teeth, they look so hard.

SmitoniusAndSonata said...

CHEESE FLAVOUR ? Oh dear.

G.B. Miller said...

This is just a natural extension of jelly bean. Any and all flavors make it to a jelly bean, thus any and all flavors make it to a candy cane.

If I was able to eat candy canes again, I would go for the bacon.

nothoughtsnoprayersnonothing said...

Excuse me, but I am feeling a wee bit nauseous!

Deedles said...

I would try them all, including pickle! Of course, I also love jalapeno flavored jelly beans. If it's sweet, I'll eat, hence the diabetes :)

Sandy said...

OMG!! That's just wrong. I can do the red and white, and maybe the red, green and white. That's it! I've seen many colors and dislike them, but had no idea they had such hideous flavors. I like tradition.

e said...

I could see all of these as potato chip (crisp) flavors, but candy canes? I don't even like the traditional ones!

Rain said...

OMG...some of those are totally grosse, but I guess I'd try a poutine one if they existed lol! I've tried the blueberry ones, meh. I think I'm a tradition red and white gal! :)

LL Cool Joe said...

I'd rather not eat any, they rot my teeth just looking at them. They aren't really that popular here in the UK, apart from the traditional red and white ones.

This N That said...

Good grief..Why can't they ever leave well enough alone?? That's awful..What other flavors are there???I think they have it all covered..

Bill Lisleman said...

No on most of them. Certainly a big no on Mac and Cheese and the gravy.
I would try the bacon because well it's bacon and bacon rules the flavors. Now the artificial flavor maybe no good.

Liz Hinds said...

You certainly have a wide range of sugar canes over the sea there!

Fundy Blue said...

Oreo candy canes might be good, and I've had cinnamon, but yuck to the rest.

Rommy said...

Ugh, some of those sound naaaaaasty! LOL, I'll stick to a little peppermint in my chocolate, thanks.

Ur-spo said...

Funny you should mention this -
I tried to get their Macaroni and Cheese mints - they are sold out.
I agree with you canes - proper ones anyway are peppermint.

Jenn said...

Cinnabon candy canes please!!!!

baili said...

new generation ,new tastes lol

StrictlyMystic said...

I would totally scarf down the hot cinnamon ones. If black and white striped licorice candy canes were a thing they would also be on my Christmas yummies list.

Magic Love Crow said...

They are like chips now! LOL! I think I would like to try the Mac and Cheese or the pickle ones! LOL!
