Friday Face OFF -- Chameleon

For this week's Friday Face OFF link party
of art featuring faces, hosted by Nicole of

Here's a whimsical chameleon which I did
in a recent watercolour pencils class.

Canadian readers may recognize this image --
it's from a past advertising campaign
by one of our national telecom
companies called TELUS.

Cute as the dickens, isn't it?

The Cerberus Heatwave

That's what Italians are calling their current
scorching summer heatwave in excess of 40ºC.

It's a fitting reference to classical Roman/Greek mythology.
Cerberus is the three-headed dog who guards
the gates of Hell (well, technically, the gates of Hades).

Cerberus doesn't guard the gates against people
trying to get in, of course, but against people trying to get out.

There is no escape from Hell/Hades,
and similarly none from the heatwave!

So while Cerberus is having his 15 minutes of fame
in the 21st century, here's a meme tribute
to everyone's favourite big slavering hellhound!

No one is entirely sure what the name"Cerberus" means.
According to Wikipedia, possible interpretations
include "flesh-devouring" and "evil of the pit."

What is NOT correct, alas, is the following
internet meme saying it means "Spot."

Too bad. I liked that particular bit of whimsy!

Friday Face OFF -- Movie Star

For this week's Friday Face OFF link party
of art featuring faces, hosted by Nicole of

Here's a movie star!

Recognize him?

No one in the art class did except for me.
Probably because the subject photo
dates from at least 35 years ago.
Today he's a geezer like the rest of us
and looks completely different.

It's the actor Aidan Quinn.

Although rarely the leading man, he has had
notable supporting roles in popular movies
such as The Mission (1986), Benny & Joon (1993),
Legends of the Fall (1994), Practical Magic (1998), and
most recently on TV as Captain Gregson
in the series Elementary (2012–2019).

As you can see from the subject photo,
we used a grid to guide us in
the correct placement of his features.

This is advisable when you need a portrait
to recognizably match the subject.

Ordinarily, I don't like drawing with a grid
and prefer the challenge of drawing freehand,
but a grid certainly does make things
easier in more difficult circumstances.

So -- do you remember Aidan Quinn
and were you/are you a fan?

Back in MY Day . . .

Remember THESE stories?

Of course, now it's OUR turn
to let whippersnappers know
how tough WE had it!

Such stories appear to be a UNIVERSAL need,
no matter the species or lack thereof!

Oh well, today's youngsters
will be old one day too and then
it will be THEIR turn to bitch
about how rough THEY had it!

Gators 'n Crocs

I can never tell them apart!

And speaking of Steve Irwin,
his place in the pantheon
is secure!

Don't you just
miss them ALL?
