Friday Face OFF -- Movie Star

For this week's Friday Face OFF link party
of art featuring faces, hosted by Nicole of

Here's a movie star!

Recognize him?

No one in the art class did except for me.
Probably because the subject photo
dates from at least 35 years ago.
Today he's a geezer like the rest of us
and looks completely different.

It's the actor Aidan Quinn.

Although rarely the leading man, he has had
notable supporting roles in popular movies
such as The Mission (1986), Benny & Joon (1993),
Legends of the Fall (1994), Practical Magic (1998), and
most recently on TV as Captain Gregson
in the series Elementary (2012–2019).

As you can see from the subject photo,
we used a grid to guide us in
the correct placement of his features.

This is advisable when you need a portrait
to recognizably match the subject.

Ordinarily, I don't like drawing with a grid
and prefer the challenge of drawing freehand,
but a grid certainly does make things
easier in more difficult circumstances.

So -- do you remember Aidan Quinn
and were you/are you a fan?

He was quite a hottie back in the day, though he's still kinda geezer hot?

"geezer like the rest of us!" Speak for yourself dear!!!! LMAO!!!!

Oh Aiden Quinn. Alas, the only thing I recall seeing him and was an Early Frost. But I would say your portrait does him justice.

Great job! I can see how the grid would help and I had no idea people used them.

Faces are a talent I never had.

I plead guilty.

You did a nice job with his hair.

I remember him....a handsome guy then and a handsome geezer now! Great work, Deb.

Lady M said...

Nope did not recognize Aiden although when you mentioned Legends of the Fall, he played the eldest brother - correct??

Rosemary said...

I suspect that Aidan Quinn would be over the moon should he see the great drawing you did of him.

Parnassus said...

Hello Debra, Although I'm sure he would be flattered by your fine drawing, I have never even heard of him, or seen any of the movies you mentioned. --Jim

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Lady M -- Yes, that's right and Brad Pitt was the younger brother.

LMAOOO
I cackled at 'Geezer'! You're too funny.
And I love Aidan. He's in two of my fav movies: Practical Magic and Desperately Seeking Susan. He's super handsome!

XOXO

I don't recall him this young. I remember him from Benny & Joon. Love his eyes!

Boud said...

I'd never heard of him! I'm even older, I guess
The grid idea is written up in medieval manuscripts. I guess you could say it's tried, true and established.

Boud said...

So busy nattering about grids I omitted to admire your excellent rendition.

sirkkis said...

You've masterly drawn his expression👍
I'm self learned painter and don't know the techniques, only read from golden ratio and golden number.
Happy weekend to you🦋

Please don´t kill me.
It´s a very great portrait, very well done.
But I ...hm-hm... never heard the name nor any of the movie ones...

Wait. Elementary is on TV here now.
That´s him??? The one who works with the Asian woman?
I popped in once but it was nothing for me, kinda.

Great idea with the grid!
Though, as you say... it´s a bit like a kid´s game?
Do you ?? how do you do that?

Tom said...

...Debra, I have lived much of my life in cave, Aiden who? And all of the shows are new to me too! As far as drawing his face, I wouldn't have a clue where to start. Have a great weekend.

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Iris Flavia -- On "Elementary," he is the Scotland Yard police detective. The grid does help break the picture down into more manageable little chunks to draw.

He was hot!

That is a very good portrait work!

You did a brilliant job. Looks amazing
We used the grid method when we painted the pelicans.
This little control freak found it liberating. The teacher didn’t have to Stand
Behind me saying relax Angela. Just go with the flow. Be free
And the whole time it just makes me even more tense lol

I think I need to go back and rewatch some of those films because I don't recognize him. But your drawings is amazing and he was (or maybe still is) a handsome guy. Happy weekend. hugs-Erika

That's amazing looking, I like how you capture the details of his face. ❤️ I've only seen him in Elementary

What a fantastic drawing, Debra. It is awesome. I have never seen any of the films and had no idea who he was until you mentioned Elementary. Goodness, he changed. You did a great job of drawing the young Aiden Quinn.

Unknown said...

Definitely remember him. You did an excellent job btw. I had to google him to see what he looks like today. Still very good looking. He is a few years older than me and I would not consider him or myself a geezer. Not yet anyway.

River said...

I love Aiden Quinn, saw him in bike leathers in "Desperately Seeking Susan", Madonna was in that too but I don't care about her so much. I didn't recognise him from your drawing, I saw David Hasselhoff (*~*)

Moving with Mitchell said...

Aidan Quinn. Heavy sigh. Oh, yes, I remember him. Oh, yes, I'm a fan. And he got hotter as he got older. As if the good looks weren’t enough, he starred in An Early Frost.

The Captain said...

I love Practical Magic but my eyes were never off Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock! You are an amazing artist.

Mike said...

This post almost snuck by me! The young picture looked familiar but I couldn't put a name to it. I looked up Aidan Quinn. I know him as an actor. I wouldn't have been able to put a name to the older picture either. 😄

Janie Junebug said...

I remember Aidan Quinn. He was also in Desperately Seeking Susan and Avalon--a lot of good movies.

Love,
Janie

dee mum guessed right!! she like aiden quinn when he was young thought he wuz handsome, then he kinda disappeared for a long time.

Andrea @ From The Sol said...

I don't remember Aiden Quinn probably because he was a Canadian star(I am assuming) and not a Hollywood star, right? I think I would remember him if I saw him as he is quite handsome :) Excellent portrait though and I am with you, I don't like grids, but I can see here that it does make a difference.

Andrea @ From The Sol

Debra She Who Seeks said...

@ Andrea @ From The Sol -- No, Aidan Quinn is an American of Irish heritage. All his films are Hollywood movies.

Bea said...

I remember I first saw A. Quinn in the film 'A Handmaid's Tale' back in 1990, or so. He's a great actor.

Ur-spo said...

Alas I am not familiar with Mr. Quinn.

Richard said...

I apologize. Please forgive me, but I live under a rock. I have heard the name. This will be an opportunity for me to learn more about this heart-throb. If you like him, he can't be all bad!

Kirk said...

Though still basically a handsome dude, Quinn looks VERRRRRRRRYYYYYY different on Elementary than he did in Benny and Joon.

Johnny Depp hasn't changed as much. I think the pressure is on you more when you're a headliner.

Sandy said...

You did a wonderful job. I don't recognize him, but reviewing the shows you listed I can see why...I didn't watch those shows.

e said...

You really captured him! He had that whole smoldering thing going on... Absolutely swoony in Desperately Seeking Susan. I'm glad he is still working.

Carola Bartz said...

I don't know Aidan Quinn, but the drawing is excellent.

Guillaume said...

I remember him mainly for The Assignment, a neat little spy thriller about Carlos the Jackal.

Martha said...

Wow! Great job on the portrait. You really captured him!

The Happy Whisk said...

Dang, Debra! I love this. I also loved him in Practical Magic. A go-to movie that I still own on DVD. Happy New Week.

lissa said...

It's a good drawing. I like the grid system but not everyone's feature is symmetrical so it might not work as well.

I've seen Benny & Joon and Elementary but I didn't recognize him as I don't recall seeing him young like that.

Have a lovely day.

NatureFootstep said...

I rarely watch movies so I did not recognize him.
My mother tought me how o use the grid :) It is a gret tool!

Wow..that is great!!! There are four things I don't do..faces, feathers and fur..Maybe I should try the grid..
He's a looker..I saw a few of those movies but I don't really remember him or his name..Cute though
